bShopify allows you to load one image per variant. One. Load the blues in serial before the first red, before the last red, before the 24 other images that the customer has to scroll through to see the second blue version. This is business as usual for Shopify and has been for a long time.
It’s not just product description and an image for apparel and home furnishings. You need multiple views, front & back, fabric close-ups, product scale views with other products in the room. Furniture stores can easily require 15 images. Fine jewelry can require macro views, on model views and packaging views. Prior to third party apps, the native commerce platform limited you to one image per variant.
This post compares two options for running an online store. It covers the features which Shopify provides for free, the features which apps add, and a list of some shops worth running in 2026 that actually do what they claim, have real stats, and real features, without any nonsense or hype.

What Shopify native actually does
You can apply this to any product in the admin, and for each variant row you can select a small image which will be the featured image for that particular variant. This image will appear to the left of the galleries up top on the product page, and when you scroll through the variants this gallery will automatically scroll to that selected image. All the other images for the variants and colours will still be viewable.
Figures you’re going to get 5 variants shown in a gallery format. Unfortunately there is no filtering or sorting or any other features can be applied to this gallery format. Additionally the “Select a Variant” portion of the feature only changes the focus within the list to highlight the currently selected option.
This approach can work for two colours and three images, but very soon unravels into chaos with 10 colours and 50 images. See 2048 variants for the maths behind this. For more information see the complete guide to solutions to this problem, which outlines the steps to represent multiple images per variant.
Where the native option breaks
Three problems show up fast.
- Gallery clutter. Every variant photo is visible at all times. Pick blue and you still see red, green, yellow. The shopper has to filter with their eyes.
- Mobile chaos. On phones the gallery becomes a long swipe with 30 plus slides. Conversion drops because shoppers give up before reaching the second blue photo.
- Wrong featured image. The scroll-to behavior is inconsistent across themes. Some scroll. Some replace. Some do nothing. We documented theme behavior in the Horizon themes guide.
Why does Shopify default to not displaying variant images? Why does Shopify default to not displaying product option values on product pages? Honestly, no one knows why Shopify defaults to these behaviors. The Shopify product team has not touched the variant image model in ages. Stores on the Shopify Plus plan sometimes can work around these default behaviors with metafields and special Liquid edits but generally speaking this is engineering heavy functionality that most stores don’t have the time or money to explore.

How to pick
If you only have one product on site and you are testing a concept you should use a free plan to see if filtering converts better. If you have a Plus store and a rigid theme please check if the app has good coverage for common page builders. If you sell on collection pages and would also like swatches on this page, this is a separate product offered at rubikify.com, Combined Listings.
When selecting a Shopify theme, there are 3 key features that you should consider before you look at the rest of the theme. Whether or not the theme will be offered on a subscription basis, whether or not the theme has been reviewed by Shopify and marked as “Built for Shopify” and finally, whether or not the theme supports the page builder you currently use. In my case, I like a flat theme better and was easier to configure than Shopify’s responsive subscription themes.
We quickly advised our customer of a number of page improvements to maximise sales and advised of our free Variant Image Checker and Variant Image Calculator tools.
FAQ
Can Shopify show multiple images per variant natively?
Because Shopify only allows one image to be assigned to a variant, the rest of your product gallery will be viewable to all shoppers.
Do I need an app to filter the gallery by variant?
Note that all of this can be done before you even write a single line of custom Liquid code. There are several apps available that will make many of these customizations for you. Here’s one example of an app that can solve this particular problem for you: Varianta Images for Rubik Cube.
Is Built for Shopify important?
This app has Shopify approval for performance, design and reliability. Not a requirement but nice to have a filter.
Do these apps slow down my product page?
rubik: loads metafield data, this shouldn’t have a big impact on the performance (I think) – other apps behave differently so make sure the theme you have is compatible before installing.
What about combined listings?
– Variants are a special case that applies inside of a single product. There is also a class of image apps that work inside of a combined listing of two products. See Combined Listings vs Variants page for more information.
Can I bulk upload variant images with these apps?
You can upload product images individually, but most apps support drag and drop folders or even Shopify CSV imports. See our guide to bulk uploading images here.
Will these apps work with my page builder?
Rubik supports: Beae, EComposer, Foxify, GemPages, Instant, PageFly and Replo. Please refer to the specific app documentation for builder support.
