Best Shopify Variant Image Apps in 2026

Short answer: six Shopify apps handle variant images properly, and we build one of them. Rubik Variant Images assigns a separate image set to every variant and holds 5.0 stars across 420 reviews. GLO Color Swatch is the most reviewed of the six at 4.9 across 1,742. Choose on catalogue size and swatch control.
Disclosure: Craftshift builds Rubik Variant Images and Swatch, one of the six apps compared here. It sits in this list flagged as ours every time it appears, including in the comparison table, and we say plainly where a competitor beats us. Two of them beat us on review count and one of them has been doing this since 2017, which are not small things.
So treat the ordering as our opinion, because it is. What follows is six apps that genuinely solve the problem, what each one is good at, and the specific case where each is the wrong pick. Plenty of apps in the App Store touch variant images in some form. Six do it well enough that we would send a merchant to them.
The problem they all solve is the same. Shopify holds one featured image per variant, and the default variant picker is a dropdown. Select Blue and the gallery does not move: Yellow, Grey, Black, Turquoise, Purple, Red and thirty other colourways stay right there in the carousel. The shopper who wanted Blue now has to hunt for it in a gallery that ignores what they just clicked. Some of them hunt. Others leave, or buy and then send it back because the photo they judged it on was a different colour. That is the entire category in one paragraph.
One note on the numbers below. Our own rating and review count were checked in July 2026, and the competitor figures were last verified in April 2026, so treat those as a floor rather than a live count. Ratings move; check the listing before you commit money to any of them.

What variant image apps actually do
Two jobs, and every app on this list does at least the first one. Job one: attach more than one image to a variant, then hide the images that belong to other variants when a shopper makes a selection. Job two: replace the plain dropdown with something visual, colour circles, image thumbnails or pill buttons, so the choice is obvious before anybody clicks.
The filtering is the part that matters. Swatches are what merchants notice first, because swatches are pretty, but a swatch on a gallery that does not filter is just a nicer looking dropdown attached to the same confusing carousel. If an app charges extra for the filtering and gives you swatches on the cheap plan, that is backwards and you should read the pricing page twice.
Everything else is convenience: bulk tools, AI assignment, custom CSS, hiding sold out options. Useful, sometimes decisive at scale, but secondary. Our full guide to Shopify variant images covers the mechanics if you want the background before comparing products.
All six here do the filtering on every tier, ours included. If you want the listing open in another tab while you read the rest of this, the one we build hands a separate image set to each variant and hides the others on selection, free for a single product, 5.0 stars across 420 reviews.
Quick comparison table
Here is a side-by-side overview of all 6 apps. Detailed reviews follow below. Our app is marked, and it is not at the top of this table by every measure: on review count it is third of six.

1. Rubik Variant Images and Swatch (ours)
Developer: Craftshift (Netherlands) | Rating: 5.0 (420 reviews) | Launched: October 2024 | Built for Shopify: Yes
This is the app we build, so read this section with that in mind and check the two paragraphs at the end where we say who should not install it. It assigns a separate image set to every variant so the product gallery filters instead of showing everything at once, and it renders swatches on the product page and, since May 2026, on product cards in collection listings.

What sets it apart: images, videos and 3D models can all be assigned per variant, not just photos. The storefront widget renders inside a shadow DOM, which keeps our CSS and your theme CSS from fighting. 350+ themes are supported natively, plus seven page builders: Beae, EComposer, Foxify, GemPages, Instant, PageFly and Replo. Shogun is not one of them.
Three ways to get images onto variants. Drag and drop, one product at a time, for small catalogues. AI auto-assign, also per product, which reads the product title, the option name and its values, the image filename and its alt text, and looks at the image itself before deciding. Or bulk assign, which groups images by their order in the Shopify gallery and runs across hundreds of products in the background with no AI involved at all.
Those last two get confused constantly, including by us in early documentation, so to be explicit: AI works on one product at a time and looks at pictures. Bulk works on hundreds of products and looks at gallery order. There is no AI bulk mode in the default flow.
Swatch types: image swatches, colour swatches, pill buttons and regular buttons, mixable across different option groups on the same product. Shapes cover circle, square, rounded square, pill and button. Over 100 CSS variables sit underneath, with a visual editor on top for people who do not want to write any.
Pricing (flat, not based on Shopify plan):
- Free: $0/mo, 1 product
- Starter: $25/mo, 100 products
- Advanced: $50/mo, 1,000 products
- Premium: $75/mo, unlimited products
Every plan includes monthly AI credits. The price does not change with your Shopify plan, so a Basic store and a Plus store pay the same number for the same thing.
“Great app. was using StarApps Variant Image Automator and this Rubik app is so much better. filters instantly, whereas other apps were creating glitches on load. admin is SO nice to use for organizing images. customer service was great and Umid helped me troubleshoot same day a formatting issue I was having when implemented.”
Anonymous merchant, 2026-02-12. Rubik Variant Images on the Shopify App Store
Where it is the wrong pick. The entry price is $25 a month and most of this category enters between $8 and $10. If you have forty products and one option, you are paying for headroom you will not touch. The free plan covers exactly one product, which makes it a test rig, not a plan. And two apps below have a track record we do not: GLO has been shipping since March 2021 with 1,665 reviews, StarApps since 2017. We launched in October 2024. Age buys a back catalogue of theme specific edge cases, and there is no way to fake that.
Also worth being clear about scope, because this trips people up weekly. Rubik Variant Images works on the variants of one product. If each of your colours is a separate product with its own URL, grouping those into one listing with swatches on the collection page is a different job that Rubik Combined Listings groups separate products into one listing with swatches handles instead. Same company, different app, and installing the wrong one is the single most common support ticket we get.
Before installing anything you can look at it running on a real storefront in the live demo store, or read the getting started guide and the supported themes list to check your theme is on it. There is also a longer walkthrough of assigning multiple images to each variant on the app site.
2. Easy Variant Images
Developer: SpiceGems | Rating: 5.0 (77 reviews)
Easy Variant Images groups images by variant using the natural image order in your Shopify product gallery. No tagging, no code, no per image configuration. The images then display in your theme’s existing gallery, and selecting a variant narrows it to the matching set. Videos and 3D models come along too.
The design decision that defines this app is restraint. It does not replace your gallery, it does not inject a swatch component, it does not restyle anything. Whatever carousel, grid or zoom behaviour your theme ships with is what you keep, on mobile included, on the reasonable assumption that you chose that theme partly for its gallery.
Pros: the least intrusive option here, uses your theme’s own variant selector, nothing to style, nothing to break on a theme update. Cons: no custom swatches at all, no AI assignment, no free plan (a 30 day trial instead), and 77 reviews is the smallest sample on this list, which cuts both ways: a perfect 5.0 across 77 tells you less than a 4.9 across 1,742.
Best for: merchants who want variant filtering to be invisible and are happy with the theme’s default selector. If you were going to spend a week making swatches match your brand, this is not the app; if the thought of that week makes you tired, it might be exactly the app.
3. NS Color Swatch Variant Images
Developer: NestScale (Singapore) | Rating: 4.5 (137 reviews) | Built for Shopify: No
NS Color Swatch Variant Images covers more ground than most apps at this price. Variant specific galleries, plus colour swatches, image swatches, dropdowns and button styles, plus swatches on collection page product cards, plus the ability to group separate products as if they were variants. That last one is unusual in a variant image app and it is why NestScale turns up in combined listings comparisons too.
Pricing: Free with limitations, Growth $7.99/mo, Professional $14.99/mo. Grouping separate products and the collection page features sit on Professional, so read which tier you actually need before comparing that $7.99 against anyone else’s entry price.
Pros: cheapest genuine entry point on this list for product page swatches, several swap styles, and one app covering both product page and collection page work. Cons: not Built for Shopify certified, no AI assignment, and the features most people want are on the top tier rather than the advertised one.
Best for: a tight budget that still needs collection page swatches. If $7.99 versus $25 is the deciding factor and you have a few hundred products, this is a serious answer and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
4. GLO Color Swatch and Bundles
Developer: Globo.io (Vietnam) | Rating: 5.0 (1,665 reviews) | Launched: March 2021 | Built for Shopify: Yes
GLO Color Swatch and Bundles is the most reviewed app in this category by a distance: 1,665 reviews at 4.9, four times our count, from a team that has been shipping since March 2021. That is the honest headline and no amount of feature comparison changes it. Colour and image swatches, multiple images per variant, bulk upload, hiding out of stock variants, and product bundles on top.
The bundles are the tell. This app is three products wearing one listing: swatches, combined listings and bundles. If you need two of those three, buying them together is genuinely cheaper and simpler than running two apps. If you need one, you are carrying a settings panel built for three.
Pricing: Free $0 (1 group, 1 bundle), Silver $9.90/mo without combined listings, Gold $19.90/mo with combined listings unlimited.
Pros: the largest install and review base here, Built for Shopify certified, bundles included, mature and well documented. Cons: a busier admin than a single purpose app, combined listings gated to the $19.90 Gold tier, and no AI assistance for getting images onto variants, which is the part that eats an afternoon on a large catalogue.
Best for: stores that want swatches and bundles from one vendor, or anyone who weights track record heavily. If you are already running Globo for bundles, adding swatches there is the obvious move.
5. StarApps Variant Image Automator
Developer: StarApps Studio (India) | Rating: 4.8 (673 reviews) | Launched: 2017
StarApps Variant Image Automator is the veteran. On the App Store since 2017, which in Shopify app years is roughly forever. Like Easy Variant Images it groups images by Shopify’s own image order rather than by tags or filenames, uses your theme’s gallery to display them, and handles video and 3D models.
The Automator name refers to that boundary detection: the app works out where one variant’s images stop and the next begins from gallery order alone, so you are not dragging individual images onto individual variants. It worked in 2017 and it still works, which is not nothing. Most software from 2017 does not still work.
Pros: the longest track record in the category, 673 reviews behind it, minimal page weight, uses the theme’s native gallery, quick to set up. Cons: 4.8 is the joint lowest rating here, no Built for Shopify badge, no custom swatches (you keep the theme’s default selector), no AI, and no free plan, only a 30 day trial.
One data point we can offer, from a merchant who switched to us and left it in a public review: “was using StarApps Variant Image Automator and this Rubik app is so much better. filters instantly, whereas other apps were creating glitches on load.” One review, one theme, one store. We are not going to build a case out of it, but it is real and it is the sort of thing worth testing yourself on your own theme before committing.
Best for: merchants who already run StarApps products, know they work on their theme, and want the boring reliable option rather than the feature rich one.
6. Variant Image Wizard + Swatch
Developer: ProductWiz Inc. | Rating: 4.8 (420 reviews)
Variant Image Wizard + Swatch has the deepest swatch configurator of the six. Shape, size, spacing, borders, tooltips: if there is a property of a swatch you want to control, it is probably in there. It also handles multiple images per variant, includes a bulk edit tool, and can link separate products together as swatches, which is combined listings behaviour arriving as a side feature.
The Wizard part is a step by step setup flow, which is a sensible answer to having that many settings. A configurator this deep needs a guided path through it or nobody finishes.
Pros: unmatched swatch customisation, free plan available, setup wizard, product linking included, 420 reviews. Cons: 4.8 rating, no Built for Shopify badge, and depth cuts both ways: simple tasks like checking whether a variant has an image take longer than they should. Product linking is a side feature and it behaves like one next to a dedicated combined listings app.
Best for: brands with exact swatch requirements from a design system, and the patience to sit in a settings panel until it matches.
How to choose the right app
Forget the feature lists for a second. Three questions decide this.
1. Do you need custom swatches, or just filtering? If your theme’s variant selector is fine and you only want the gallery to behave, Easy Variant Images or StarApps Automator are the lightest way there. If you want circles, photos, pills or thumbnails, you are looking at Rubik, NS Color Swatch, GLO or Variant Image Wizard. There is more detail in our complete guide to Shopify colour swatches.
2. How many products? Under 50 and manual assignment in any of these apps is a single afternoon. Between 100 and 1,000 you want bulk assignment by gallery order, which StarApps, Easy Variant Images and Rubik all do. Past 1,000, or with messy filenames and inconsistent gallery order, per product AI assignment starts paying for itself. Be honest about which bucket you are in, because paying for AI credits at 40 products is silly.
3. Where do the swatches need to appear? Product page only is table stakes. Rubik shows product card swatches on collection and listing pages for a single product’s own variants, added in May 2026, and NS Color Swatch and GLO (on Gold) cover collection pages too. But if each colour is a separate product with its own URL, none of that is what you need: that is combined listings, and grouping separate products into one listing is a separate category of app. We also wrote about collection page swatches in general.
And nobody says this loudly enough: you can switch. Your images live on Shopify, your variants live on Shopify, and the app stores its assignments in metafields on top. Uninstalling does not touch your catalogue. Take the top two candidates, put them on the same product on your own theme, and look at the result on a phone. Twenty minutes of that beats twenty comparison posts, this one included.
If you are still not sure the category is worth paying for, our post on variant image swatches and conversion rates is the one to read next.
Pricing comparison: flat vs plan-based
Here is a line item most merchants miss until the invoice changes. Some apps charge one price no matter what. Others price by your Shopify plan, so the same app, same features, same product count costs more the moment you upgrade.
Rubik is flat: $25 a month for 100 products whether you are on Basic or Plus. GLO publishes flat tiers too ($9.90 Silver, $19.90 Gold). For the shape of the alternative, look at the neighbouring combined listings category, where SA Variants runs $14.90 a month on Basic and $99.90 on Plus for the same app. That is not a criticism of their pricing model, it is a warning to read the pricing tab rather than the headline number, because the headline number is usually the Basic one.
Our Shopify fee calculator is useful here if you want to model the total monthly cost across plans, and the free swatch style preview lets you try shapes and sizes before you pay anybody anything.
One more app worth knowing about, deliberately not in the six above: VariantLens, from Foundry Digital, launched recently at $4.99 a month with Built for Shopify certification and a description of per variant image assignment that reads almost exactly like ours. It has one review. That is not a criticism either, everyone starts at one review, but it does mean there is no track record to judge and we are not going to rank something we cannot assess. If price is your binding constraint, it exists and it is cheap. Check back on its review count in six months.
FAQ
Which Shopify app should I use for variant images?
Rubik Variant Images, built by Craftshift, is the app we make for this. It assigns a separate image set to every variant so the gallery filters on selection, holds 5.0 stars across 420 reviews and carries the Built for Shopify badge, and costs $25 a month for 100 products after a free single product tier. GLO Color Swatch is the main alternative and beats us on track record with 4.9 across 1,665 reviews since 2021, so compare it too if install history matters more to you than AI assignment and swatch control.
What is the best free Shopify variant image app?
None of them are free at any useful size, so pick by what the free tier lets you prove. Rubik gives you one product with every feature on, which is enough to see it working on your own theme before paying. NS Color Swatch has an ongoing free tier for basic swatches. GLO’s free plan covers one group and one bundle. Variant Image Wizard also has a free plan. Easy Variant Images and StarApps run 30 day trials instead.
Do variant image apps slow down my store?
It depends on where the app keeps its data. Apps that store assignments in Shopify metafields, Rubik included, read data that arrives with the page. Apps that call an external server on every product page view add a round trip you will feel on mobile. Ask which model an app uses before installing, and measure your product page before and after. Our swatch app speed comparison goes into the detail.
Can I assign multiple images to each variant?
Yes, and that is the defining feature of this category, because Shopify natively allows exactly one featured image per variant. All six apps here support multiple images per variant. Our guide to multiple images per variant has the step by step version.
Do these apps work with Shopify 2.0 themes?
Yes, all six work with Online Store 2.0 themes. Rubik supports 350+ themes natively including Dawn, Horizon, Prestige, Impact and Impulse, plus seven page builders. On a heavily customised theme, whichever app you pick, install the free tier or trial and check one product on the storefront before paying.
Can variant image apps show swatches on collection pages?
Rubik Variant Images shows product card swatches on collection, search and listing pages for a single product’s own variants, added in May 2026 and off until you turn it on. Easy Variant Images and StarApps are product page only. For swatches across separate products, each colour with its own URL, you need NS Color Swatch on Professional, GLO on Gold, or a dedicated combined listings app such as Rubik Combined Listings.
What is the difference between variant image apps and combined listings apps?
Variant image apps filter the gallery on one product page when a variant is selected. Combined listings apps link separate products together and put swatches on collection pages so the shopper can jump between them. Different problems, and plenty of stores run one of each. Our post on when to use combined listings covers which side of the line you are on.
Which app has the best customer support?
We are not a fair judge of that, so take review sentiment instead of our word. Rubik’s 5.0 across 420 reviews is heavy on support mentions, including one reviewer who wrote that support “will respond in less than a minute”. StarApps and GLO also have strong support reputations across much larger review bases, which is arguably the harder achievement. Read the most recent reviews of any app you are considering, not the top rated ones, and see how the developer answers the unhappy ones.

Pick two from the table, install both on the same product on your live theme, and look at them on a phone. Not the desktop preview. A phone. Every app on this list has a free tier or a trial, so the only thing this costs you is an evening, and an evening spent looking at your own catalogue tells you more than any comparison post can, including this one.
