Shopify limits 2026: products, variants, images, options

Shopify limits are the invisible ceiling that every growing store eventually hits. One day your catalog imports cleanly, the next day a product fails because it crossed 100 variants, or an image upload errors out because the product already has 250 photos. This guide is the 2026 reference for every hard and soft limit Shopify enforces, what the real numbers are, and which limits you can actually work around without paying for Shopify Plus.

We run into these limits every week working with merchants on apparel, furniture, cosmetics, and industrial catalogs. The pattern is always the same. A store scales, the catalog expands, and the platform starts pushing back. Most merchants assume the only way out is a $2,300 per month plan upgrade. That is rarely true in 2026.

This is a mega guide, not a cheat sheet. We cover product counts, variant counts, image counts, option counts, SKU rules, locations, staff accounts, metafields, and collections. For each limit we explain the real ceiling, the practical symptoms, and the workaround. When Combined Listings can bypass a limit, we say so and show the math.

The important row is variants. Shopify raised the ceiling from 100 to 2,048 in 2024 through the Combined Listings feature, and that raise applies to every plan. You do not need to pay for Plus to get it. You just need to use the feature correctly.

Variants per product: the 100 variant wall

The 100 variant limit is the single most common wall merchants hit. A shirt in 10 colors and 10 sizes is 100 variants exactly. Add one more color and the product breaks on save.

The historical workaround was Shopify Plus, which used to unlock 2,000 variants. As of 2024 that workaround is gone in the useful sense, because the Combined Listings feature opened up 2,048 variants on every plan. The catch is that Combined Listings is not a toggle inside a single product. It is a linking feature that joins several separate products together so they behave as one.

You can check your real variant needs before you hit the wall with the variant calculator. For existing stores that are already close to the limit, the variant limit checker scans your catalog and flags products that are one expansion away from breaking.

How the math works with Combined Listings

A 10 color by 10 size by 5 material product is 500 variants. Impossible in a single Shopify product. With Combined Listings you create 5 material products, each holding 10 colors by 10 sizes (100 variants each), and link them. Shoppers see a single grouped experience. Google indexes 5 URLs. Inventory tracks cleanly.

Images per product: the 250 image ceiling

250 images per product is a hard limit. There is no plan that raises it. If you have a furniture product with 8 angles across 12 fabric options and 4 stains, that is 384 images you cannot fit into one product.

This is where people misunderstand Combined Listings. It does not raise the 250 limit inside one product. What it does is split the catalog into several products, each with its own 250 image budget. A 5 product group gives you up to 1,250 images surfaced as one shopping experience.

For deciding between variant image assignment inside the 250 ceiling and splitting into linked products, see our guide on Shopify variant and image limits explained.

Product options: the hard limit of 3

Every Shopify product can have exactly 3 options: usually color, size, and something else (material, fit, length). This is a hard limit in the admin and in the storefront API. You cannot add a fourth option inside one product, period.

Merchants with 4+ dimensions (color, size, material, length) always hit this. The workaround is identical to the variant limit workaround. Split by one of the dimensions into separate products, then link with Combined Listings. A shopper navigating your grouped listing sees 4 effective options because they swap “products” when they pick the fourth.

Products per store: no hard limit, real soft limit

Shopify advertises no limit on product count. In practice, performance starts to degrade around 50,000 products on Basic, and admin searches get slow. Plus stores comfortably hold hundreds of thousands. If you are importing 100k+ products from a supplier feed, plan for careful metafield usage and collection rules.

Use the plan comparison tool to benchmark cost against catalog size if you are weighing an upgrade.

SKUs per variant and per store

SKUs are technically unlimited across the store. One variant holds one SKU. The constraint is really inventory locations: a variant tracked across 10 locations counts as 10 inventory items, and Shopify enforces an inventory_levels ceiling in the millions. No normal store hits this.

If you run 11+ physical warehouses or retail stores, Plus is the only option. This is one of the few limits Combined Listings cannot help with.

Staff seats are another Plus-only lift. If your ops team is 20 people and you are on Advanced, you are out of room.

Metafields per resource

200 metafields per resource is the official number. In practice, apps share this pool with your custom fields, so watch the total. Definitions do not count against the per-resource limit in the same way as values.

Collections and collection rules

Collections themselves have no hard count limit. Smart collections allow up to 60 conditions. A store with 10,000 collections will see slow admin loads, not a hard stop.

Real store examples hitting limits

Apparel brand, 12 colors x 10 sizes x 3 fits. 360 variants needed, 100 allowed. Solution: split by fit into 3 products, link with Combined Listings. Result: 360 effective variants, 3 SEO URLs.

Furniture shop, 8 fabrics x 6 frames x 4 leg finishes. 192 variants, plus 8 gallery images per fabric is 1,536 images. Solution: split by frame into 6 products, each holding 32 variants and up to 250 images. Combined into a single shopper experience.

Cosmetics line, 40 shades x 3 finishes. 120 variants, blocked at 100. Split by finish into 3 products of 40 shades each. Bonus: each finish gets its own indexable page.

The full breakdown of how Combined Listings bypasses each limit lives on our sister site at how Combined Listings bypass Shopify limits. We walk through the setup and the exact numbers.

For stores that also need variant-level image filtering on the product page once they split, pair Combined Listings with Rubik Variant Images. RCL handles the grouping and the collection page swatches. RVI handles image filtering inside each product page.

When you actually need Shopify Plus

Combined Listings covers variant, image, and option limits. It does not cover:

If those do not apply to you, staying on Basic or Shopify with Combined Listings is hundreds of times cheaper than upgrading to Plus just to break 100 variants.

FAQ

What is the maximum number of variants per Shopify product in 2026? 100 by default on every plan. With the Combined Listings feature, effective variants can reach 2,048 by linking separate products, and this works on Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Plus.

Can I add more than 250 images to a single Shopify product? No. 250 is a hard limit inside one product. You can surface thousands of images by splitting into linked products with Combined Listings, where each product keeps its own 250 image budget.

Is the 3 options per product limit ever raised? No. It is a hard limit on every plan. Linking separate products with Combined Listings gives shoppers the effect of a fourth or fifth option without breaking the admin rule.

Do I need Shopify Plus to break the 100 variant limit? No. Since 2024 the Combined Listings feature has made 2,048 effective variants available on every plan. Plus is only required for locations, staff seats, checkout scripts, and enterprise features.

How many products can a Shopify store hold? There is no hard cap. Most stores stay healthy up to tens of thousands. Above 50,000 products admin search and bulk edits slow down, especially on Basic.

What happens when I try to save a product with more than 100 variants? Shopify rejects the save with an error. You will need to remove a variant or split the product into a group with Combined Listings.

Are metafields really limited to 200 per resource? Yes, 200 metafields per resource. Apps and your custom fields share this pool, so watch the total if you use several apps that write metafields.

Do location limits change with Combined Listings? No. Location limits are tied to the Shopify plan. Basic, Shopify, and Advanced each allow 10 locations. Only Plus is unlimited.

Can I use Combined Listings on Basic? Yes. It is available on every plan.

Will splitting products into a Combined Listings group hurt SEO? The opposite usually. Each linked product gets its own URL, title, and images, which is often better for indexing than cramming everything into one product with duplicate image gallery entries.

Ready to bypass the 100 variant wall
