How do I track keyword rankings for my Shopify store?

How do I track keyword rankings for my Shopify store?

Short answer: Google Search Console gives you average position for free, but it lags and it averages. For live positions on keywords you pick, you need a tracker. StoreSEO tracks rankings inside Shopify across organic, shopping, video and AI overviews, with 5 keywords free. 5.0 stars across 737 reviews.

Shopify keyword rank tracking is one of those jobs that looks solved until you actually try to answer a question with it. You rewrote 40 product descriptions in July. Did they move? Search Console will show you an average position of 14.2 for a query, blended across every device, every country, and every result type, reported two days late. Averaged over what, exactly? A number 3 on mobile in Germany and a number 26 on desktop in the US average out to something that describes neither.

That’s the gap. And it’s a real one, but it’s smaller than most rank-tracking marketing pretends, which is why this post starts with the free option rather than the paid one.

We build Shopify apps ourselves (variant images and combined listings), so we read SEO tooling the way a merchant with a finite budget should: what does the free thing already do, what does paying actually buy, and at what point does it stop being worth it? Every figure below comes from StoreSEO’s own App Store listing and its pricing page, checked on September 7, 2026.

Google Analytics and Google Search Console data connected inside a Shopify SEO dashboard

What does Search Console already give you for free?

More than most merchants use. Every query that produced an impression, with clicks, impressions, CTR and average position, filterable by country, device, search appearance and date, for 16 months. It is real data from real searches on your own store, not a simulation. If you have never opened it, do that before you spend anything, and our walkthrough of how to check your Shopify store’s SEO covers the setup.

Three real weaknesses, though. Position is an average, so a keyword that ranks brilliantly in one market and badly in another shows you a fiction. Data arrives with a lag of a day or two. And you only see queries you already get impressions for, which means the keyword you want to rank for but currently don’t is simply absent. It cannot tell you that you are number 47 for “waterproof dog coat” because at 47 you get no impressions to report.

What does a rank tracker add that Search Console can’t?

Four things, and only four. A discrete position rather than an average. A position for keywords you don’t rank for yet. Your competitors’ positions next to yours. And visibility in the result types that aren’t blue links, which now includes AI overviews.

That last one has quietly become the important one. If an AI overview answers the shopper’s question above the organic results, your number 4 position is a number 4 in a list nobody scrolled to. Tracking whether you appear in the overview itself is a different measurement from tracking rank, and it’s the reason we bothered writing this at all. It’s also why tracking positions across five result types from inside your Shopify admin is more useful than a generic SEO tool bolted on from outside. Free plan tracks 5 keywords, no card.

Worth pairing with the other half of the picture: rankings tell you where you appear, not who arrives. Our guide to tracking AI search traffic in GA4 covers the visits themselves, which is a separate and slightly maddening measurement problem.

What is StoreSEO?

StoreSEO SEO & Image Optimizer is a Shopify app by Storeware, launched on October 19, 2021, carrying the Built for Shopify badge and 5.0 stars across 737 reviews. It’s a full SEO suite rather than a rank tracker: meta titles and descriptions, schema and FAQ markup, image compression and bulk alt text, sitemaps, instant indexing, an LLMs.txt generator, and Google Search Console plus Analytics wired into one dashboard. The listing is available in 11 languages.

Two things about it are genuinely unusual for this category. It ships an MCP server, so you can drive it from Claude or another AI assistant instead of the dashboard, and it plugs into Shopify Sidekick as an app extension. Whether you want your SEO run by a chat window is a matter of taste (we’d audit before we let anything bulk-edit 700 meta titles), but almost nothing else in the SEO category offers it.

“This app has been amazing for my store. The SEO tools are simple, fast, and actually work. Image optimization, sitemap submission, and product indexing became so much easier. I noticed improvements in my search visibility within days.”

What the Keyword Rank Tracker actually measures

The rank tracker itself shipped on March 9, 2026, so it’s the newest part of a five-year-old app. Add a keyword and it monitors position from then on, though the vendor is upfront that it takes about 7 days before useful data appears. Patience, then. Rank tracking is a trend instrument, not a dashboard you refresh.

Each keyword is configured along four axes: location down to city level, device (mobile and desktop tracked separately, which matters more than people expect), language, and which search engine. You can also add up to five competitor URLs and see their positions on the same keywords next to yours.

Result type trackedWhy it matters
Overall organicThe number everyone means by “ranking”
Links and traditional web resultsClassic blue links, still where most clicks live
Video resultsWhere a product demo can outrank a page
Shopping resultsMerchant Center territory, closest to purchase intent
AI search overviews and AI panelsThe block that sits above everything else and often ends the search
Finding and tracking the right keywords for a Shopify store

The AI overview row is the one to care about in 2026. Appearing there is a different job from ranking, and it’s mostly won with structured data and clean, factual, extractable copy rather than with links. We wrote the long version in our Shopify AI readiness guide and the mechanical version in the llms.txt setup guide. You can also run your storefront through our free AI readiness checker and our JSON-LD schema generator before paying anyone to measure the results.

How much does StoreSEO cost?

Five plans, billed in USD through Shopify every 30 days, with a 7-day free trial on the paid tiers. Note that the App Store listing shows four of them; the $99.99 Growth tier appears on the vendor’s own pricing page, which is also the only place the keyword caps are published. Those caps are the column to read if rank tracking is why you’re here.

PlanPriceKeywords trackedProductsImagesAI credits
Free$052525200
Lite$14.99/mo501005001,000
Essential$39.99/mo1002502,0005,000
Growth$99.99/mo2001,0005,00012,500
Advanced$249.99/mo1,00010,00050,00050,000

AI credits top up separately at $10 for 5,000, $50 for 25,000, and $100 for 50,000. Multilingual SEO sits on Advanced only, so a store running several markets should price that in from the start rather than discovering it later.

Here’s the honest read of that ladder. At $14.99 with 50 tracked keywords, this undercuts every standalone rank-tracking tool we know of, and you get an entire SEO suite attached to it. But the product cap climbs faster than the keyword cap, so a 900-product store that only wants rank tracking is pushed to the $99.99 tier by its catalog size rather than by its tracking needs. Check which number binds first for you. Our Shopify SEO apps roundup puts the free-plan ceilings side by side across the category, which is the fastest way to see whether a competitor’s free tier covers you instead.

When you should not buy a rank tracker

Under about 50 products with no keyword strategy yet, don’t. You’ll be tracking positions on keywords you chose arbitrarily, watching them move for reasons you can’t attribute, and mistaking the dashboard for progress. Fix titles, descriptions, alt text and schema first, using our Shopify SEO checklist and the free SEO checker. Measurement is worth paying for once there’s something deliberate to measure.

“I’m really happy with this app! Coming from an idea-based business, I found it very easy to use and understand. The tools are simple, and I can actually see the results after making changes. It makes SEO feel much less complicated and saves a lot of time.”

Three more honest caveats. The rank tracker is six months old, which is young for a measurement tool, and measurement tools earn trust slowly. The 7-day warm-up means you can’t validate it inside a trial that’s also 7 days, so start on the free plan instead. And rank tracking of any kind measures a moving target: Google personalizes, localizes and rewrites results constantly, so treat every position as an estimate with error bars, from any vendor.

Now the part that irritates us. An entire industry sells rank tracking at $99 to $500 a month for what is, mechanically, running searches and writing down where you appeared. Meanwhile Search Console sits there free with 16 months of genuine query data, unopened, on most of the stores we look at. If you are paying for rankings data before you have read your own Search Console, you have bought a thermometer and not taken your temperature.

And rankings are upstream of the thing that actually pays you. A number 3 position on a product page where every color shares one photo still converts badly, which is the half of the problem we build for: color swatches and per-variant galleries on the page the ranking sends people to, and combined listings when your colorways are split across separate products and splitting your ranking signals with them.

Setup guides live in the StoreSEO documentation, the full plan comparison is on storeseo.com, and the vendor’s own write-up of the tracker is on their Keyword Rank Tracker announcement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to track keyword rankings for a Shopify store?

Start with Google Search Console, which is free and reports real queries, clicks and average position for 16 months. Add a tracker when you need discrete positions, keywords you don’t rank for yet, or competitor comparison. StoreSEO does this inside Shopify and tracks 5 keywords on its free plan, 50 at $14.99 a month, and 1,000 on the $249.99 tier.

Can you track whether your store appears in Google AI Overviews?

Yes, though few tools do it. StoreSEO’s Keyword Rank Tracker monitors five result types per keyword: overall organic, traditional web links, video, shopping, and AI search overviews and panels. That last one is a separate measurement from rank, because an AI overview can absorb the click before anyone reaches the organic results at all.

Is Google Search Console enough on its own?

For many small stores, yes. It reports genuine impressions and clicks rather than simulated positions, and it costs nothing. Its limits are that position is an average across devices and countries, data lags by a day or two, and keywords you don’t yet rank for never appear because they generate no impressions to report.

How much does StoreSEO cost?

There is a permanent free plan covering 25 products, 25 images, 200 AI credits and 5 tracked keywords. Paid plans run $14.99, $39.99, $99.99 and $249.99 a month, each with a 7-day free trial, scaling products, images, AI credits and tracked keywords together. AI credits can be topped up separately from $10 for 5,000.

How long before rank tracking data appears?

StoreSEO states it takes about 7 days after adding a keyword before the tracker shows useful data. That is normal for rank tracking, which measures trends rather than moments, and it is worth knowing before you start a 7-day paid trial: begin on the free plan so the warm-up does not eat the trial.

Can you track competitors’ rankings too?

Yes. You can add up to five competitor URLs and StoreSEO pulls their positions alongside yours for every keyword you monitor. Each keyword is also configured by location, device, language and search engine, so a comparison reflects the market you actually sell into rather than a global average.

Can you run Shopify SEO from ChatGPT or Claude?

With StoreSEO, partly. It publishes an MCP server, so an AI assistant can run its SEO actions against your catalog without you opening the dashboard, and it plugs into Shopify Sidekick as an app extension. Review what it proposes before approving bulk edits: a wrong meta title applied to 700 products is a slow thing to undo.

Pick the five keywords you would genuinely change the business over. Not fifty. Five. Put them in a tracker, wait a week, and see whether the last three months of work moved any of them. StoreSEO’s free plan tracks exactly five, which is either a coincidence or someone there has run a store.
