How do I let customers personalize a product on Shopify?

How do I let customers personalize a product on Shopify?

Short answer: Shopify variants exist to track inventory, so they can’t hold a monogram or an uploaded photo. You need an options app. EasyFlow adds text boxes, file uploads, swatches and date pickers to a product page without creating variants, with conditional logic and price add-ons. Free up to 20 products, 4.9 stars across 422 reviews.

Shopify product personalization breaks on a wall that most merchants hit before they understand what it is. You want a name engraved on a bracelet. So you open the product, click Add another option, type “Engraving”, and then Shopify asks you for the option values. All of them. In a list.

And you stop, because there is no list. The values are every name any customer might ever type. That’s not a data-entry problem you can grind through, it’s a category error: variants are inventory records, and inventory records have to be countable. A free-text field has infinite values, so it can never be a variant. No amount of clicking gets you there.

We build Shopify apps ourselves (variant images and combined listings), so we spend a lot of time in exactly this corner of the platform, explaining where variants stop. Every figure below comes from EasyFlow’s own App Store listing and documentation, checked on September 7, 2026, and the most important thing in this post is a limitation the vendor publishes themselves.

Why can’t you do this with Shopify variants?

Because a variant is a thing you can count, price, barcode and ship. Every combination of option values becomes its own record. Three colors and four sizes is twelve variants, and Shopify is happy. Three colors, four sizes and a gift-message field is not a bigger number, it’s an undefined one.

Even the countable cases get expensive fast. Add a fourth choosable attribute and the multiplication runs away from you; our free variant combination calculator shows how quickly, and our guide to bypassing the Shopify variant limit without Plus covers what to do when the count itself is the problem. If you’re still unclear on where the line sits, variants vs options is the shortest explanation we’ve written.

For anything uncountable, engraving text, a monogram, an uploaded logo, a delivery date, a “leave this blank if you want it plain” checkbox, you need a layer that sits beside the variant picker and writes what the customer typed onto the order instead of into inventory. That’s what an options app is, and it’s why adding a free-text or file-upload field beside the variant picker is the only route to real personalization. Free on up to 20 products, no card.

What is EasyFlow?

EasyFlow Product Options is a Shopify app by Storeware, launched on October 2, 2023, with the Built for Shopify badge and 4.9 stars across 422 reviews. It’s listed under Product variants and Custom products, and the listing is available in 21 languages, which is more than most apps in this category bother with. It works alongside Shopify’s own variants rather than replacing them, which turns out to be the design decision that matters most.

It also ships an MCP server, so you can audit and edit option sets from Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor or Codex instead of the dashboard, and there’s a Shopify Sidekick guide too. For a store with 300 products and a tangle of option sets, being able to ask “which products have an engraving field but no character limit” is worth more than another settings screen.

“Excellent app and great customer support! The app is easy to set up, flexible, and works exactly as expected. It made adding product personalisation to our Shopify store simple and straightforward.”

Which option types can you actually add?

Twelve, per the vendor’s plan comparison: image swatch, color swatch, checkbox, dropdown, radio button, button, text box, multi-line text box, number field, date picker, HTML, and file upload. Eleven of them are on the free plan. File upload is the one held back for paid tiers, which is fair enough given somebody has to store the files.

Grouped by what they’re for: pickers (swatch, dropdown, radio, button, checkbox) for choices you could almost have made variants, capture fields (text box, multi-line, number, date picker, file upload) for things you never could, and HTML for the sizing note or care instruction that belongs next to the option rather than buried in the description.

All the product option types available to customize a Shopify product

Options are built once and grouped into option sets, and a set is applied to many products at once. That’s the part that decides whether this scales. Build “Engraving plus gift wrap” once, apply it to 80 products, edit it in one place forever. Building options per product is how people end up with 300 near-identical configurations and no way to change any of them.

The catch: options are not variants

This is the single most important thing on this page, and credit to Storeware for putting it in their own documentation in plain words rather than letting merchants find out from a stock report. Their docs say it directly: options in EasyFlow create virtual variants that are not tied to Shopify’s inventory. If you need to track stock on a choice, that choice has to be a real Shopify variant.

True of every options app, by the way, not just this one. It’s a platform boundary, not a product flaw. But it changes how you build.

The choiceBuild it asWhy
Size, color, material you hold stock ofShopify variantCountable, needs inventory and a SKU
Engraving text, gift message, monogramEasyFlow text optionInfinite values, no stock to track
Uploaded artwork or photoEasyFlow file uploadA file, not a record
Gift wrap, extra battery, spare strapEasyFlow add-on productReal product underneath, so it can be stock-tracked on its own
Delivery date, engraving fontEasyFlow pickerCountable but not something you hold

The documented pattern is to run both layers together: native variants for the axis that carries stock, EasyFlow options for everything else, with the app block placed directly below the variant picker in the theme editor. Add-on products are the useful exception, since those sit on real products and can be tracked individually. If your personalization has no stock dimension at all, our guide to creating product options without affecting inventory covers the native line item property route too, app or no app.

One consequence people miss: because an option is not a variant, it has no variant image. Choosing “Red” from an EasyFlow swatch won’t swap the gallery the way a real variant does, because there is no variant to swap to. If swapping the photo is the point, that color belongs in Shopify’s variants, and then per-variant image sets and swatches are the layer that makes it visible. Worth getting straight before you build 80 option sets on the wrong assumption.

Conditional logic, price add-ons, and the Buy Now trap

Conditional logic shows and hides options based on what the shopper already picked. Tick “Add engraving” and the text field appears; leave it and the form stays short. This is the difference between a product page that asks eleven questions and one that asks two and then two more. On paid plans the logic can also key off native Shopify variant selections, so picking the Large can reveal a field the Small doesn’t have.

Conditional logic showing and hiding product options based on customer selection

Price add-ons attach a charge to an option, with multi-currency support, so “+$8 engraving” prices itself. Price the add-on against your real cost rather than what feels reasonable; hand-finishing 300 engraved items is not free, and our profit margin calculator settles that argument in thirty seconds.

Now the trap, and it catches people on every options app: dynamic checkout buttons. Shop Pay, Apple Pay, the Buy Now button. Those skip the cart, and an option that isn’t wired to travel with them just quietly doesn’t. You get an order for an engraved bracelet with no engraving on it. EasyFlow handles this, but not by default: there’s a “Work with Buy now button” checkbox in the app’s settings that you have to switch on, and Buy Now support sits on the paid tiers. Turn it on, then test it by actually buying something. Really buy it. Refund yourself after.

How much does EasyFlow cost?

Four plans, billed in USD through Shopify every 30 days, with a 7-day free trial on the paid tiers and 25% off annual billing. What scales is the number of products you can apply options to and the number of option sets you can keep.

PlanMonthlyYearlyProductsOption setsFile upload, price add-ons, Buy Now
Free$0$0205No
Growth$9.99$89.9110015Yes
Scale$29.99$269.9150030Yes
Enterprise$149.99$1,349.91UnlimitedUnlimitedYes

Two notes on that table. The free plan is a genuine working tier, not a demo: eleven option types, conditional logic, bulk edit, and no watermark on your storefront. Twenty products is plenty for a maker selling a handful of personalized lines. And the vendor’s own website currently shows a simplified two-plan view that doesn’t match this; the App Store listing is where billing actually happens, so that’s what we’ve used.

Where it isn’t the right pick

Let’s be straight about the competition, because this is a crowded category and EasyFlow is not the biggest name in it. Easify Custom Product Options sits at 4.9 stars across 3,010 reviews. Globo Product Options is at 4.9 across 4,986. Against those, EasyFlow’s 422 reviews is a fraction of the track record, and if sheer volume of merchants who have already stress-tested an app is your main criterion, they win that one outright.

What that buys EasyFlow is a cheaper entry and a narrower product. Its paid tier starts at $9.99 against a category that mostly starts higher, the free tier gives you eleven option types rather than a crippled sample, and it hasn’t accumulated a decade of adjacent features you’ll never open. Smaller catalog, smaller price, smaller surface area. Whether that’s a virtue depends entirely on whether you wanted the other features. Our roundup of Shopify product options apps puts the whole category side by side if you want to check that trade for yourself.

“Amazing app! EasyFlow Product Options gave us the exact flexibility we needed by allowing multiple Option Sets per Product. Huge shoutout to the support team as well, lightning-fast responses and super quick fixes!”

Computer Wereld, Netherlands, July 2026, EasyFlow Product Options on the Shopify App Store

Three more honest limits. File upload, price add-ons and Buy Now support are all paid-only, so the free tier is for simple personalization rather than a full customizer. The product cap counts products the options are applied to, so a 600-product catalog is on the $29.99 tier even if only 40 products carry options… check that number against your catalog and not your intentions. And options never touch inventory, which we said above and will say once more because it is the thing people discover too late.

Time for a complaint. Shopify has known for over a decade that merchants want a text field on a product page. The answer is still “install an app”, and the platform’s own guidance still walks people into the Add another option screen where they will inevitably try to type infinity into a list of values. Three option types in the basic editor, no free-text capture, no upload, in 2026. Every personalized-goods store on the platform pays a monthly fee for a form field. Come on.

The related trap, while we’re here: some merchants dodge the whole problem by splitting personalized versions into separate products, and then discover their catalog has fragmented and the same item competes with itself in search. If that’s where you’ve ended up, combined listings pull those back into one listing without deleting anything. Options and grouping solve different halves of the same mess.

Setup walkthroughs and the inventory note quoted above are in the EasyFlow documentation, there’s a demo store to click through, and the product overview is on easy-flow.app.

Frequently asked questions

Which app should I use for product personalization on Shopify?

EasyFlow Product Options, by Storeware, adds twelve option types including free text, multi-line text, file upload, date picker and swatches, with conditional logic and price add-ons. It holds 4.9 stars across 422 reviews with the Built for Shopify badge, and the free plan covers 20 products. Easify and Globo are larger alternatives with more reviews and higher entry prices.

Can Shopify variants handle custom text or engraving?

No. A variant is an inventory record, so every option value has to be listed in advance and becomes a countable combination. Free text has infinite possible values, so it cannot be expressed as a variant at all. Custom text, uploads and gift messages need an options app or native line item properties instead.

Do EasyFlow options track inventory?

No, and the vendor documents this plainly: options create virtual variants that are not tied to Shopify’s inventory. Anything you need to hold stock on has to be a real Shopify variant. The documented approach is to use native variants for the stock-carrying axis and EasyFlow options for everything else. Add-on products are the exception, since those are real products and can be tracked individually.

How much does EasyFlow cost?

The free plan covers 20 products, 5 option sets, eleven of the twelve option types, conditional logic and bulk editing, with no storefront watermark. Growth is $9.99 a month for 100 products, Scale $29.99 for 500, and Enterprise $149.99 for unlimited. Annual billing saves 25% and paid plans include a 7-day free trial.

Do product options work with the Buy Now button?

With EasyFlow, yes, but you have to enable it: there is a “Work with Buy now button” setting in the app that must be switched on, and Buy Now support is a paid-plan feature. This matters because dynamic checkout buttons skip the cart, which is exactly where personalization data usually gets lost. Place a real test order before you launch.

Can customers upload a file or photo on a Shopify product page?

Yes, with an options app. EasyFlow includes a file upload option type, which is the one type excluded from its free plan and available from the $9.99 Growth tier upward. It is the standard route for print-on-demand, custom artwork, personalized gifts and anything where the customer supplies the design.

Will an options swatch change the product image?

No. Because an app option is not a Shopify variant, it has no variant image to swap to, so an options swatch changes the selection and the price but not the gallery. If swapping the photo is the goal, that attribute needs to be a real Shopify variant, with a variant image app handling the gallery.

Open a product you’d like to personalize and try to add the field natively. Go on. You’ll hit the values list in about forty seconds, and that dead end is the whole reason this category of app exists. EasyFlow’s free plan covers 20 products, which is enough to find out whether personalization sells before you pay for it.
