Best Shopify product options and customiser apps (2026)

Short answer: For real custom options such as engraving text, gift wrap or a file upload, the most reviewed app in the category is Globo Product Options, Variant, at 4.9 stars across 4,691 reviews. But options are not variants. If the choice needs its own photos, Rubik Variant Images, built by Craftshift, assigns a separate image set to every real variant instead. It holds 5.0 stars across 410 reviews and carries the Built for Shopify badge, and it is deliberately not an options app.

The Shopify App Store lists dozens of apps under product options, and almost every one opens with the same promise: go beyond the variant limit. That promise is true. It is also the most misread sentence in the category, because of how it is true.

An options app can offer infinite choices precisely because those choices are not variants. Shopify caps a product at 2,048 variants and 250 media files, and an options app sidesteps both by keeping the shopper’s choice outside the variant record. Engraving text, a monogram, a date, an uploaded logo, a gift box: none of that has to be a row in your variant table.

Where it bites is the moment colour goes through an options app. Colour needs its own photo, its own stock count and often its own price, and those three things live on variants. So which apps are worth installing, and where exactly is the line?

Ownership disclosure: Craftshift builds Rubik Variant Images and Rubik Combined Listings. Neither is a product options app, so neither is ranked as one here. Ours appears once in the comparison table and in its own section, flagged as ours, because the boundary between options and variants is the whole point of this post and we would rather show where we sit than pretend we have no stake. The seven apps below are ordered by App Store review count, largest first, read off each listing on 29 July 2026.

Options versus variants: the line that decides everything

A Shopify variant is a real record. It carries a price, a SKU, a barcode, an inventory level per location and one featured image. Every combination can be counted, sold, reported on and photographed.

A product option created by an app is a different animal. It is a field on the product page whose value travels with the line item. That is why these apps can promise unlimited choices: they are not competing for variant slots at all. Read the listings and they say so themselves. Globo opens with the 2,048 limit and offers infinite custom options instead. Infinite Product Options says go beyond Shopify’s variant limits. OPTIS says the same thing in different words. Three consequences follow.

  • Inventory. Shopify decrements stock per variant. A choice that is not a variant has no stock record unless the app builds one, usually by attaching a hidden add on product, and that tends to be a higher tier: Hulk puts Inventory and SKU Management on Enterprise.
  • Reporting. Your Shopify reports break down by product and variant. Option values arrive on the order as line item text. Readable, sure. Sortable in a variant report, no.
  • Images. The product gallery is tied to the product and its variants. An options app can show a colour chip inside its own picker, but the gallery above it does not follow an option value. This is the one that surprises people.

So the decision rule is short. Does the choice need a price, a stock count or a photo set of its own? Then it is a variant, and an options app is the wrong tool. Free text, a file, a date, a dimension, a checkbox that adds a fee? Options app, every time. Count your real combinations with the free variant combination calculator first, and if you are unsure whether colour should be a variant or a separate product, the separate products versus variants tool settles it in about thirty seconds.

One more thing worth saying out loud, because most roundups in this category will not: an options app cannot fix a colour picker. If a shopper taps Walnut and the gallery keeps showing Oak, no number of option types will help, since filtering the gallery down to the images that belong to the selected variant is a variant level job. Free to install, 5.0 stars across 410 reviews. Different category, same product page.

Every app, what it does and where it stops

1. Globo Product Options, Variant

4.9 across 4,691 reviews, live since December 2020, by Globo Options. The most reviewed app in the category by a wide margin, and its free plan is useful rather than a trial: 15 option types, unlimited option sets, unlimited products and orders, conditional logic, no watermark. Price add ons sit on Premium at $9.90. Where it stops: Plus stores pay $39.90 and $59.90 for those same tiers, so the price on the card is not the price a Plus store pays.

2. Easify Custom Product Options

4.9 across 2,832 reviews, live since April 2023. The newest app in the top four, and the one with the clearest pricing line in the category: every paid tier is marked same price for all Shopify plans. Pro is $9.99 with 28 option types, formula and per character pricing, and in cart editing. Premium at $19.99 adds the live preview personaliser. Where it stops: that live preview, the thing engraving and print shops actually want, is two tiers up.

3. Infinite Product Options by ShopPad

4.7 across 2,408 reviews, live since June 2015. One plan, $12.99, everything included, which is refreshing after four pricing tables in a row. Native bundles are part of it, not an add on. Where it stops: no free plan, only a 14 day trial, and the listing shows English as the only language. Selling in five markets? That matters more than the price does.

4. OPTIS Product Options, Variant

4.9 across 2,230 reviews, live since December 2021. Twenty plus option types, a font picker, image upload with live preview, gift wrap, and cart page editing on Platinum. It leans hardest into variant adjacent features of any app here, listing multiple variant images and size charts alongside its option types. Where it stops: the free plan caps you at 10 variant option sets, and conditional logic needs Advanced at $9.99.

5. SC Product Options by Shop Circle

4.6 across 1,196 reviews, live since December 2012. Fourteen years on the App Store is a serious track record, and Basic at $14.99 includes free install and consultation, which suits stores that want someone else to do the setup. Where it stops: it is the most expensive entry point here, swatches and conditional logic sit on Premium at $39.99, and the free tier covers development stores only.

6. PC Custom Product Options

4.7 across 1,141 reviews, live since November 2012, the oldest app in the comparison. The free plan covers unlimited basic fields: line text, paragraph text, radio buttons, dropdowns, checkbox groups. For a store that needs a name engraved and nothing else, that is the whole job for nothing. Basic at $8.90 is the cheapest paid tier here and adds file upload, date picker and swatches. Where it stops: upcharge pricing and conditional logic both sit on Premium at $18.90.

7. Hulk Product Options

4.8 across 1,139 reviews, live since March 2018, by HulkApps. Basic is $10 for unlimited options and 10 option types, Advanced is $20 and adds conditional logic, cart editing and changing product images per option. The interesting tier is Enterprise at $49.90, where Inventory and SKU Management appears. That is the honest shape of the problem: tracking stock against something that is not a variant is real work, and the app that does it charges for it.

The adjacent job: images per real variant

Rubik Variant Images and Swatch (ours, and not an options app)

Ours: 5.0 across 410 reviews, live since October 2024, built by Craftshift. It does one thing the seven apps above deliberately do not. Shopify gives each variant a single featured image, so a shopper who picks Walnut still scrolls past every Oak photo. Rubik assigns a whole image set to each variant, filters the gallery on selection, and renders the picker as image swatches, colour swatches or pills. Videos and 3D models included. It reads from Shopify metafields, with no external API calls on the storefront.

Where it is the wrong pick: if your shopper needs to type a name, upload a logo or pick a delivery date, Rubik does none of that and never will. Buy an options app. 410 reviews against Globo’s 4,691 is a plain gap in track record, and our free tier covers one product, which is a test rather than a plan. Plenty of stores run one app from the table and one from this section, which is the right answer more often than either vendor admits.

“This app makes it super easy to manage images for products that have multiple variations (size and flavor in my case). The support is great as well!”

How to choose in about a minute

Answer one question first: does the choice need its own stock, price or photos? Everything else follows from that.

  • Free text, monograms, notes and nothing else: PC Custom Product Options on the free plan, or Globo’s. Paying is optional.
  • Personalisation where the shopper wants to see the result: Easify Premium at $19.99, or OPTIS Platinum.
  • Priced add ons and bundles as the main job: Infinite Product Options at $12.99 flat.
  • On Shopify Plus: read the Plus row first. Globo goes to $39.90 and $59.90, OPTIS has a $49.99 Plus tier, Easify charges the same on every plan.
  • Option values that need real stock counts: Hulk Enterprise, or reconsider whether they should have been variants.
  • The gallery needs to change on selection: variant job, not an options job.

Now the opinion. The most common mistake here is not picking the wrong options app, it is reaching for an options app to solve a variant problem because the free tier was cheaper than restructuring the catalogue. It works for about a month. Then the reports do not add up and the stock count is a guess. Structure first, app second. If colour or material genuinely deserves its own page and its own price, the answer is separate products linked into one listing, which is a different decision entirely.

More on our side of the line: working around the variant limit without Plus, tracking inventory per variant, and the SKU generator for new variant rows. You can also see gallery filtering running in the Rubik demo store or read the getting started guide.

FAQ

Which app should I use for Shopify product options?

For genuine custom options, Globo Product Options, Variant is the most reviewed choice at 4.9 stars across 4,691 reviews with a free plan that covers 15 option types. Easify Custom Product Options is the pick if you want one price on every Shopify plan. If the choice is a colour or material that needs its own photos, that is a variant, and Rubik Variant Images, built by Craftshift, assigns a separate image set to every variant at 5.0 stars across 410 reviews.

Do product options count towards Shopify’s 2,048 variant limit?

No, and that is the entire trick. Options apps advertise unlimited choices because those choices are not stored as variants: the value travels with the line item. It keeps you under the ceiling, and it keeps the choice out of Shopify’s variant level inventory and reporting.

Can a product options app track inventory?

Not natively, because Shopify counts stock against variants. Apps solve it in different ways, often by attaching a hidden add on product, and it tends to sit on a higher tier: Hulk lists Inventory and SKU Management on its $49.90 Enterprise plan. If stock accuracy matters, make the choice a variant.

Can an options app change the product images when a shopper picks a colour?

It can show a colour or image chip inside its own picker, but the main gallery follows the product and its variants, not an option value. To narrow the photos to the selection, the colour has to be a real variant and a variant image app filters the gallery. Two layers of the same page.

What is the cheapest way to add engraving text to a Shopify product?

A free tier, in most cases. PC Custom Product Options gives unlimited basic text fields on its free plan, and Globo’s free plan covers 15 option types with no watermark. You start paying when you want to charge extra for the personalisation, since price add ons are a paid feature in every app compared here.

Do I need both an options app and a variant image app?

Often yes, and that is how the platform is built rather than a sales pitch. A jewellery store selling four metal finishes with an engraved name needs the finish as a variant, with its own price, stock and photos, and the engraving as an option. Different storage, different app.
