Best Shopify apps for product variants (2026)

Best Shopify apps for product variants (2026)

Looking for the best Shopify apps for product variants is harder than it should be, and the reason is structural: Shopify files 463 apps under one category called Product variants, and those apps do three completely different jobs. Some add custom options to a product. Some control which photos show when a shopper picks a colour. Some merge separate products into one listing. They sit in the same list, they use nearly identical words in their titles, and merchants install the wrong one constantly. We know because we build two of them, Rubik Variant Images and Rubik Combined Listings, and a good share of our support conversations start with someone who bought the wrong tool.

So this is not a ranked list of ten winners. It is a map of the three jobs, with the apps that currently rank highest in Shopify’s own category results for each one. Positions and review counts were pulled from the App Store in July 2026.

Disclosure: Craftshift builds Rubik Variant Images and Rubik Combined Listings, two of the apps in this category. They appear below in the position Shopify’s own category ranking puts them, flagged as ours every time, and we say plainly where a competitor is the better pick. The order here is not our opinion: it is the order the App Store returned in July 2026.

What this guide covers

The three jobs hiding in one category

Shopify gives you three option types and, since the 2026 limit change, up to 2,048 variants per product. That sounds generous until you actually sell something with a monogram, or a shirt in twelve colours where each colour needs its own photo set, or a sofa that lives in your catalogue as six separate products because the fabrics have different suppliers.

Three different limits, three different fixes. Here they are in plain terms:

  1. You need more or different options. Text fields, file uploads, checkboxes, conditional logic, a fourth and fifth option. These are product options apps.
  2. Your options exist, but the gallery is wrong. Shopper clicks Blue, still sees the red photo, or sees all sixty images at once. These are variant image and swatch apps.
  3. Your colours are separate products. They each have their own URL and your collection page shows the same jacket five times. These are combined listings apps.

Get the job wrong and no amount of app quality saves you. A product options app will not fix a gallery. A swatch app will not merge two products. This is the single most useful thing to know before you install anything, and it is the thing the category page cannot tell you.

Job one: adding options Shopify cannot store

This is the biggest group in the category and it owns the top of the rankings. If you sell personalised, made to order, or configurable products, this is your shelf.

  • Easify Custom Product Options currently sits at position one in the category, 4.9 stars across 2,833 reviews, free plan available. Broad option types and conditional logic.
  • Globo Product Options, Variant is position two and carries the largest review count in the whole category at 4,674, also 4.9 stars.
  • OPTIS Product Options, Variant holds 4.9 stars across 2,227 reviews.
  • Aris Product Options, Variants has 4.9 stars across 1,616 reviews.
  • EasyFlow Product Options is newer to the top ten with 4.9 stars across 416 reviews.

One warning that applies to this whole shelf and rarely appears in comparison posts: custom options usually live outside Shopify’s real variant records. That has consequences downstream. Inventory tracking per option, reporting, and anything that reads variants through the API can behave differently than you expect. Ask about that before you commit a catalogue to it, because migrating out later is genuinely painful.

Job two: showing the right photo per variant

Different problem entirely. Your variants are fine. Shopify simply allows one featured image per variant, so a shopper who selects Blue gets one blue photo and then scrolls through every other colour you sell. On a twelve colour catalogue that is a genuinely bad product page, and it is the most common reason people search for a variant setup fix in the first place.

  • GLO Color Swatch Variant Image ranks third in the category with 5.0 stars across 1,660 reviews.
  • Rubik Variant Images & Swatch ranks fourth with 5.0 stars across 408 reviews. This is ours. It assigns a separate image set to every colour variant so the gallery filters instead of showing all sixty photos, and it renders swatches on product pages and on collection product cards. Free plan available, paid from $25 a month, which is above the category band. More on that in the pricing section.
  • Color Swatch King: Variants is one of the oldest options here, live since 2019, 5.0 stars across 2,737 reviews. If you want the largest install history in this job, this is it.
  • OP Color Swatch Variant Images holds 5.0 stars across 773 reviews.
  • Upload-Lift Image Upload covers the adjacent case where the shopper uploads the image rather than picking one, 4.9 stars across 141 reviews.

The thing worth testing before you pick one: how does it behave on your theme, and how does it load? Anything that filters a gallery has to hook into the theme’s variant selector, and themes disagree wildly about how that works. If you want to see how a filtered gallery behaves in practice, the live demo store has it running on a real theme. And if you are not sure which theme you are on, our Shopify theme detector tells you in a few seconds.

Job three: merging separate products into one listing

The third shelf solves something structural. Your red jacket and your blue jacket are two products, each with its own handle, its own URL, and its own row on the collection page. Shoppers see what looks like duplicate inventory. You lose the colour swatch entirely because Shopify has no idea these two things are related.

Shopify shipped a native Combined Listings feature, which is worth knowing about before you pay anyone. It works, but it is limited, and the apps below exist because of where it stops. We wrote a longer breakdown of how combined listings work on Shopify if you want the full picture.

  • G: Combined Listings & Variant ranks sixth with 5.0 stars across 370 reviews.
  • SA Variants: Combined Listings holds 5.0 stars across 375 reviews.
  • Rubik Combined Listings Swatch holds 5.0 stars across 61 reviews. This is ours. It groups separate colour products into one listing with swatches on collection and product pages. It launched in February 2026, so its review count is a fraction of the others in this shelf and you should weigh that honestly: the apps above have years of edge cases behind them that we are still meeting.
  • Stamp Show Variants Collection focuses on the collection page view, 5.0 stars across 144 reviews.
  • LinkedOption Combined Listings has 5.0 stars across 131 reviews.

What the pricing actually tells you

Nearly every app on that shelf enters between $4 and $12 a month. That is not a coincidence and it is not generosity. It is what happens when a category has 463 competitors and no way for a shopper to tell them apart from the listing page. Everyone races to the same number.

Which is worth saying out loud, because we price above that band and we get asked about it. The honest answer is that the cheap tier usually caps something: product count, group count, image count. Read what the entry plan actually includes rather than what it costs, then work out the number at your catalogue size. A $5 plan that covers 50 products is not cheaper than a $25 plan that covers 1,000 if you have 800 products.

And check the review distribution, not just the average. A 5.0 across 131 reviews and a 4.9 across 4,674 are not the same claim. Rating research consistently finds that purchase likelihood peaks somewhere between 4.0 and 4.7 and then declines as ratings approach a perfect 5.0, because a flawless score reads as too small a sample to trust.

The two apps we build, in more detail

Both appear in the table above at the position Shopify’s category ranking gives them. Since we built them we can say more than a listing page shows, so here is the longer version, including where they are the wrong choice.

Rubik Variant Images & Swatch does job two. It assigns a separate image set to every colour variant so the gallery filters instead of showing everything at once, and it renders swatches on product pages and on product cards. 5.0 stars across 408 reviews, free plan available, paid from $25 a month. It loads through Shopify metafields with no external API calls, and it supports over 350 themes natively.

Rubik Variant Images showing only the relevant variant images on a Shopify product page

Rubik Combined Listings Swatch does job three. It links separate products into one listing with swatches on collection and product pages. 5.0 stars across 61 reviews, free plan available, paid from $10 a month. It launched in February 2026, so the review count is genuinely low compared to the apps above and you should weigh that.

“Hands Down the best customer support of all the variation/swatch apps I have used till date. The app does everything. From individual variant gallery to really detailed customizable swatch’s. All in a single app. Originally we used to use two different apps so this is so much more cost efficient for us.”

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Shopify app for product variants?

There is no single best one, because the category covers three unrelated jobs. For custom options and personalisation, Easify Custom Product Options and Globo Product Options rank highest in Shopify’s own results. For showing the right images per variant, the top-ranked apps are GLO Color Swatch Variant Image, Rubik Variant Images & Swatch (built by us, ranked fourth in the category with 5.0 stars across 408 reviews), and Color Swatch King. For merging separate products into one listing, G: Combined Listings, SA Variants and Rubik Combined Listings Swatch (also ours) cover it. Identify your job first, then compare within that shelf.

How many variants can a Shopify product have?

Up to 2,048 variants per product, raised from the long standing limit of 100. You still get three option types by default. If your combinations exceed that, or you need a fourth option, that is when a product options app or a combined listings approach becomes necessary.

Can I show different images for each variant without an app?

Partly. Shopify lets you assign one featured image per variant, and some newer themes will group images by option value. What you cannot do natively is give each variant its own multi image gallery and hide the rest. That gap is what the variant image apps fill.

Do these apps slow down my store?

It depends entirely on how the app loads its data. An app that calls an external API on every product page view adds a round trip that you will feel. An app that stores its configuration in Shopify metafields reads data the page already has. Ask which approach an app uses before installing, and test your product page speed before and after.

What does the Built for Shopify badge mean here?

It is Shopify’s highest level of recognition for an app, covering performance, ease of use, and demonstrated quality over time. Every app listed in this guide carries it. Since it is awarded by Shopify rather than claimed by the developer, it is a useful filter when two apps otherwise look identical.

Should I use combined listings or more variants?

Use variants when the options genuinely belong to one product and share a description. Use combined listings when the colours are already separate products for a real reason: different suppliers, different SKUs in your warehouse system, or separate product pages you want ranking individually in search. Merging is also the faster fix when restructuring the catalogue is not realistic.

One last thing, and it is the part people skip. Before you install anything from this category, open your own product page on a phone and pick a colour. Whatever annoys you in that moment is your actual job. Everything above is just picking the tool for it.
