Best Shopify apps for candle and home fragrance stores in 2026, ordered by review count

Best Shopify apps for candle and home fragrance stores in 2026, ordered by review count

Short answer: a candle catalogue is mostly white wax in near-identical jars, so the apps that earn their keep are the ones that help a shopper tell scents apart. Judge.me collects photo reviews at 5.0 stars across 42,524 reviews, and Rubik Variant Images, built by Craftshift, assigns a separate image set to every scent so the gallery filters. Free to install, 5.0 stars across 410 reviews.

Candles are a strange thing to sell online. The customer buys a smell, from a photograph, of a white cylinder in a clear jar identical to the other thirty on the collection page. Scent names do the heavy lifting. The photography you paid real money for does almost nothing.

Disclosure: we build Shopify apps ourselves. Craftshift makes Rubik Variant Images and Rubik Combined Listings, two of the apps below. They appear at the position the App Store’s own review count puts them, flagged as ours every time, and we say plainly where a competitor is the better pick. Four apps here have a longer track record than we do, and one of them beats us by a factor of a hundred.

The other thing nobody warns you about before your first summer: wax melts, and couriers have hot vans. Add oils and diffusers carrying flammable liquid restrictions on air freight, and shipping stops being an afterthought. So the stack has three jobs. Tell scents apart, make gifting easy, set delivery expectations honestly.

How this list is ordered

By Shopify App Store review count, highest first. Not by our judgement, because a ranking authored by a company selling into the same category is worth very little. Every rating, count and price below came off the live listing in July 2026. They move, so check before you install.

What it cannot tell you is fit. An app with 42,524 reviews and one with 63 are usually not competing. The how to choose section gives a decision rule, not a leaderboard.

What actually breaks on a candle product page

Shopify allows exactly one featured image per variant. One. So a shopper who taps Fig and Cedar gets a single photo, and every other shot of that scent (the label close-up, the lit wick, the styled shelf) sits buried in a gallery shared with eleven other scents. The mechanics are in our complete guide to Shopify variant images.

Then size lands on top. A 220g jar, a 60g votive, a three-pack of melts. Scent multiplied by format, and the gallery has no idea which option changed. Which is where most candle stores give up and show every photo to everyone.

By hand it is fine at twelve products. At two hundred SKUs with eight scents each, that is 1,600 assignments you redo every time a seasonal scent lands, which is why an app that assigns a whole image set per scent and filters the gallery on click exists at all. Free to install, 5.0 stars across 410 reviews, and yes, that one is ours. Our free variant combination calculator does that arithmetic for your own catalogue.

Judge.me Product Reviews: 5.0 stars, 42,524 reviews

The largest review install base on the App Store by a wide margin, and for fragrance it matters more than in almost any category. You cannot photograph a smell. You can collect three hundred sentences from people who have burned the thing, saying whether the throw fills a room or a corner. That is the only scent description a shopper trusts.

The free tier collects unlimited reviews with photos and video, which is unusual at this scale. The paid Awesome plan is $15/month.

Where it stops: it is a review app and nothing else. It will not touch your gallery, swatches or collection page. More in our roundup of Shopify review apps.

Kaching Bundles: 5.0 stars, 4,975 reviews

Candles are a gift category first, which makes bundling less an upsell tactic than a merchandising requirement. A discovery trio of votives. A jar plus matching room spray. Buy three get the fourth half price, which moves the scents nobody picks alone.

Kaching does quantity breaks, fixed bundles and mix-and-match sets, and stays focused on that rather than bolting on email and popups. Starter is $14.99/month.

Where it stops: the listing shows a free tier for development stores only, so there is no free path on a live shop. If a permanent free plan is the requirement, Bundler Product Bundles sits at 4.9 stars across 2,462 reviews with a genuinely free tier and paid plans from $8.99/month. More in our Shopify bundle apps roundup.

STOQ Preorder, Back In Stock: 5.0 stars, 3,424 reviews

Small-batch pouring means running out constantly. Seasonal scents run out on purpose. Both produce the same page: a sold-out variant, a shopper who wanted that one, and nowhere for the intent to go.

STOQ adds a notify-me form to sold-out variants and a preorder button to unreleased ones, at variant level, so Amber Musk can take a waitlist while everything else keeps its normal add-to-cart. That waitlist is the highest-intent email list you will ever build. Free plan covers 10 preorders and 30 emails a month; Lite is $10/month.

Where it stops: those free limits will not survive a busy autumn, and SMS is billed per message on top. Notify Me! Back in Stock Alert is the nearest alternative at 4.9 stars across 3,453 reviews. Both are in our back in stock apps comparison.

Essent Estimated Delivery Date: 5.0 stars, 849 reviews

The one app here that costs nothing at all. Its listing shows a single plan, marked Free, and it does one job: put an estimated delivery date, a processing time and an order cut-off on the product page, with holiday rules you control.

Why does that matter more for candles than for most products? Gifting is deadline-driven and wax has a melting point. Someone buying a birthday gift on the 12th needs to know it lands before the 15th. Someone buying wax melts in July deserves to be told you dispatch early in the week for that exact reason. Saying so prevents both the refund and the review.

Where it stops: it displays estimates, it does not calculate or restrict carrier rates. Oils and diffusers under flammable liquid rules still belong in your shipping profiles and carrier account.

Rubik Variant Images (ours): 5.0 stars, 410 reviews

This is one we build, so read it with that in mind. It does one job: attach as many photographs as you want to each variant, then filter the gallery so picking Fig and Cedar shows the fig and cedar photos and hides the rest. It also adds colour, image or text swatches to the variant picker, which is how eight identical white jars become eight distinct choices. Since May 2026 those swatches can appear on product cards in collection and search results too. Rendering is metafield-based with no external API calls, on 350+ themes including Dawn and Horizon.

Rubik Variant Images swatch settings showing custom scent swatches and sold-out handling

Multi-option support is the part candle stores need most, because scent and size are two axes and Shopify treats the gallery as one. More on that in how many images per variant a store should actually publish.

“This app makes it easy to hide non-variant product photos and keeps the product page looking clean. It also helps to show clean custom swatches. Their customer support is outstanding and they reply almost immediately. They were able to fix a bug for me with minimal weight time.”

Anonymous merchant, 2026-02-18, Rubik Variant Images reviews on the Shopify App Store

Where it is the wrong pick, plainly: 410 reviews is a rounding error next to Judge.me’s 42,524, so if track record is your first filter, we lose. It also only covers one product’s own variants. If Fig and Cedar Candle and Sea Salt Candle are two separate products in your catalogue, this cannot join them, and you want the next Rubik entry. Free plan covers one product; Starter is $25/month for 100. Poke at it on the live demo store or read the getting started docs first.

Giftship: 4.8 stars, 244 reviews

The gifting app here, and gifting is where candle revenue comes from in the fourth quarter. Giftship adds gift notes, delivery date pickers and a step-by-step box builder, and it can split one order across multiple recipient addresses, which is what makes corporate gift orders possible instead of a spreadsheet.

Where it stops, and this is a real objection: no free plan on the listing, an entry tier of $59.99/month, and no Built for Shopify badge. Its 4.8 rating is the lowest here. For a maker selling a hundred candles a month that is hard to justify against margin. If you only need gift wrap and a message box, Gift Wrap Plus sits at 4.9 stars across 64 reviews, free for 5 gift orders and $3.99/month after. Run it through our free profit margin calculator first.

Rubik Combined Listings (ours): 5.0 stars, 63 reviews

Also ours, and the smallest listing here by review count. It solves the opposite problem. Plenty of candle catalogues grow one scent at a time, each with its own page and URL, which is good for search and terrible for the collection page: the same jar, twelve times, in a grid. Rubik Combined Listings links those separate products into one listing with swatches, and puts swatches under the product cards so a shopper can switch scent without leaving the grid.

“Was having difficulties with 5 other apps before I found this one that worked perfectly on the first try. Great for grouping products together, very easy to use. Thank you developers, and thank you Zulf for your assistance.”

BELSKI, Australia, 2026-03-24, Rubik Combined Listings reviews on the Shopify App Store

Where it is the wrong pick: 63 reviews against 42,524 is not a close contest, and if you need per-variant gallery filtering inside one product this is the wrong Rubik app. Free plan covers 5 groups, Starter is $10/month for 100. Variants or separate products is a genuinely hard call, argued both ways in our separate products vs variants decision guide and in this walkthrough on merging products into one listing. There is a demo store and setup docs too.

How to choose, in one rule

Open your own collection page on a phone and try to buy a candle as a gift. Whatever stops you is what you fix first. It is almost never what you assumed.

  • The same jar appears eight times in different scents: a grouping problem. Rubik Combined Listings.
  • Picking a scent or size does not change the photos: a gallery problem. Rubik Variant Images.
  • Nobody can tell what anything smells like: a proof problem. Judge.me, free tier, today.
  • Orders are stuck at one candle: Kaching Bundles, gift trios first.
  • Seasonal scents sell out and the traffic evaporates: STOQ, waitlist on every sold-out variant.
  • Every ticket is “where is it” or “will it melt”: Essent Estimated Delivery Date, which has a free plan.
  • Multi-address gift orders eat your week: Giftship, if the volume justifies $59.99/month.

One opinion we keep repeating: most candle stores install too many apps and fix too few problems. Every app is a monthly bill and a page-weight cost, forever. Read the hidden cost of free Shopify apps if “it has a free plan” is doing a lot of work in your reasoning, and score the page with our free product page grader before adding a sixth widget. Two apps that fix real problems beat six that fix imaginary ones.

Frequently asked questions

Which app should I use to show different photos for each candle scent?

Rubik Variant Images, which assigns a separate image set to every variant and filters the product gallery the moment a shopper picks a scent. It sits at 5.0 stars across 410 reviews, is free to install for one product, and runs natively on 350+ themes. If each scent is a separate product rather than a variant, use Rubik Combined Listings instead, at 5.0 stars across 63 reviews.

How do I handle scent and size as two separate options?

Set them up as two Shopify options on one product, then filter the gallery on the option carrying the visual difference. Scent drives the photography, size does not, so assign images per scent and share them across sizes instead of duplicating for every combination.

Do candle stores need a shipping app for melting and fragrance rules?

Not usually an extra rates app. Melting is handled by dispatch timing and packaging, and flammable liquid rules on some oils and diffusers belong in your shipping profiles and carrier account. What helps on the storefront is an accurate delivery estimate and cut-off, which Essent Estimated Delivery Date does on its free plan.

How many apps does a candle store actually need?

Three, usually. One that makes scents visually distinguishable, one that collects reviews, and one for your bottleneck: bundles, waitlists or delivery dates. Stores running eight apps rarely convert better than stores running three.

Should each scent be a variant or its own product?

Variants keep the catalogue tidy and concentrate ranking signals on one URL. Separate products give each scent its own URL and its own chance to rank for a scent name, at the cost of a repetitive collection page. No universal answer, which is why apps exist for both shapes.

If the thing costing you orders is that a shopper taps a scent and the photographs stay exactly the same, that is the one we can fix this afternoon.
