Shop MCP: Shopify opens Catalog to personal agents

Short answer: On October 13, 2026 Shopify’s developer changelog announced Shop MCP, a single MCP server at mcp.shop.com that lets any agent or app search Shopify Catalog, build carts and complete Shop Pay checkout, across “over 1 billion products,” with search needing no API key. Merchants do nothing; orders placed through an agent arrive in the admin like any other order.
Until this week, “AI shopping” on Shopify meant the big assistants: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot, Meta. Each one is a channel Shopify negotiated, built and switched on for you. Shop MCP is a different kind of thing. It is a public door into the same catalog for any agent anyone builds: a Claude or ChatGPT skill, a personal shopping bot, an app a developer ships on a Tuesday. Shopify just made its catalog, and its checkout, a thing software can use without asking.
Here is what the changelog actually says, what it doesn’t, and the one admin setting worth looking at this week. We build Octolift, an app that reads this same catalog to score products, so we read these posts the day they land.

What is Shop MCP?
From the October 13, 2026 changelog post, titled around adding shopping and Shop Pay checkout to any agent: “Shop MCP lets your agent or app search Shopify Catalog, build carts, and complete Shop Pay checkout through a single MCP connection.” It runs at https://mcp.shop.com, covers over 1 billion products in Shopify Catalog, and has a skill description at https://mcp.shop.com/skill.md that MCP-compatible agents can read to learn how to use it. There’s a CLI too: npm install -g @shopify/shop.
The access model is the striking part. “Search works without credentials.” A developer who wants to complete purchases creates an API key in the Shopify Dev Dashboard, but reading the catalog needs nothing. The post also says existing Catalog API integrations are unaffected, which matters to anyone who migrated to the UCP endpoints this summer (we covered that in Shopify Storefront MCP in 2026: what moved to UCP).
What an agent can do with it
The post names six tools. Three for finding products, the same three the catalog endpoints already expose: search_catalog, lookup_catalog and get_product. Three for buying: get_checkout, complete_checkout and search_orders.
The buying flow, as described: a signed-in shopper can pay with their saved Shop Pay details without leaving the agent, and the agent calls complete_checkout after the shopper confirms the total and payment method. The shopper is still the one saying yes. There are no webhooks at launch, so a developer has to poll get_checkout to learn whether a checkout completed; the post says so plainly.
Put together, that is the full loop: an agent finds a product in any Shopify store, assembles the cart, the shopper confirms, Shop Pay settles it, and the order lands in the merchant’s admin. The merchant was never in the conversation.
What changes for a merchant
Per the changelog, nothing is required. Orders placed through an agent “appear in the merchant’s Shopify admin like any other order,” and no separate merchant steps are listed. The catalog the agents search is the one you’re already in if you’re eligible, so the Shop MCP launch doesn’t add a new eligibility hurdle; it adds new readers of the record you already have.
Which is the actual news for a store. Every rule about that record just got more consequential, because the set of things reading it is no longer four assistants but anything built on an open MCP server. In practice:
- Eligibility is the gate. A draft product, a zero price, a password page or an excluded category keeps you out of all of it. The checks are in Shopify products not showing in ChatGPT; they apply here identically.
- The record is the product page now. An agent calling
get_productsees your title, description, options, prices, availability and policy links. Not your theme. The five signals Shopify grades on the Agentic page are the checklist, explained in Shopify’s five listing quality signals for AI. - Availability has to be true. An agent that completes a checkout against stale stock produces a cancelled order and a shopper who doesn’t come back.
- Attribution lives in Shopify. The Agentic page already reports sales per AI channel. Watch it; GA4 won’t see a checkout that never touched your site, as how to track AI search traffic in GA4 explains.
- Separate colour products are separate records. An agent sees twelve listings, not one family, so each needs to stand alone; a storefront app that groups them with swatches keeps the human page tidy without changing the records.
The other October change: compare-at prices
Four days earlier, on October 9, 2026, a quieter changelog entry changed what those agents see about your pricing: “Shopify now shares your compare-at price with AI shopping agents through Shopify Catalog.” Before that, agents saw only the current price, so a storefront markdown was invisible to them; a product on sale looked like a product at full price. Now the compare-at price rides along.
This is the one setting worth opening this week. The toggle lives in the catalog mapping settings in your admin, in the “Compare-at” section, and Shopify’s advice is to “control if AI agents can view compare-at prices by reviewing your settings.” If your compare-at prices are honest, leave it on: an agent asked for “the best deal on X” can now see you’re discounted. If your compare-at field holds placeholder numbers from a supplier import, turn it off before an agent repeats them to a shopper.
What the announcement doesn’t say
Several things circulating about Shop MCP are not in Shopify’s post, and we’re not going to repeat them as fact. The post doesn’t state a total number of tools; it names six. It doesn’t describe a human-approval rule in those words, though the flow it describes (the shopper confirms the total and payment method before complete_checkout) amounts to one. It doesn’t mention fees for agent-placed orders. And it doesn’t say whether a merchant can opt out of Shop MCP separately from the Agentic page’s channel toggles. If any of those matter to you, the primary source is the changelog itself, and the Agentic help pages are the place a merchant-facing switch would appear.
What we’d watch next: whether the Agentic page grows a row for agents built on Shop MCP (today it reports ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta), and how quickly the first consumer agents show up. Our free AI readiness checker and AI bot checker cover the open web side; the catalog side is the four views of your own record, and the robots.txt argument is settled in our rubikify.com post on whether to block AI bots: none of this is crawled, so blocking changes nothing here.
Frequently asked questions
What is Shop MCP?
A public MCP server at mcp.shop.com, announced by Shopify on October 13, 2026, that lets any agent or app search Shopify Catalog, build carts and complete Shop Pay checkout through one connection. Search needs no API key; completing purchases needs a key from the Shopify Dev Dashboard.
Do I have to do anything to be included in Shop MCP?
No. The changelog lists no merchant steps. If your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog they are searchable, and orders placed through an agent appear in your admin like any other order.
Can an agent buy from my store without the shopper confirming?
Not as described. The post says the agent completes the purchase with complete_checkout after the shopper confirms the total and payment method, using their saved Shop Pay details.
Do AI agents see my compare-at prices?
Since October 9, 2026, yes, through Shopify Catalog, unless you turn it off. The toggle is in the catalog mapping settings in your admin under the “Compare-at” section. Turn it off if your compare-at field holds numbers you don’t want an agent to repeat.
How do I see orders that came through an agent?
They arrive in the Shopify admin like any other order. For channel-level reporting use the Agentic page’s performance section, which shows sales, orders, sessions and conversion per AI channel. GA4 cannot see a checkout that completed inside an agent.
