Best Shopify apps for toy and game stores in 2026, ordered by review count

Short answer: toy shoppers filter by age before anything else, and they buy on proof that a real child liked the thing. Loox collects photo and video reviews at 4.9 stars across 8,803 reviews, and Rubik Variant Images, built by Craftshift, assigns a separate image set to every colourway or character. Free to install, 5.0 stars across 410 reviews.
Toy retail has a shape no other category matches. The person paying is not the person playing. Two thirds of the year is quiet, then eight weeks decide whether it was a good year. Products are graded by age, carry safety warnings, and come in colourways and editions that look identical in a thumbnail.
Disclosure: we build Shopify apps ourselves. Craftshift makes Rubik Variant Images and Rubik Combined Listings, two of the apps below. They appear at the position the App Store’s own review count puts them, flagged as ours every time, and we say plainly where a competitor is the better pick. Four apps here have a longer track record than we do, and the top one has twenty times as many reviews.
And collectibles behave like nothing else. A limited figure drops, sells through in an hour, and demand keeps arriving for months. If the sold-out page is a dead end, that is pure waste. Preorders and waitlists are not a nice-to-have here. They are the category.

How this list is ordered
By Shopify App Store review count, highest first. Not by our judgement, because a ranking authored by a company that sells into the same category is worth very little. Every rating, count and price came off the live listing in July 2026. They move, so check before installing.
Track record is not fit. The app with 8,803 reviews and the one with 63 are not competing for the same slot.
Why age filters and colourways break toy catalogues
Two failures, both quiet. The first is that age grading usually lives in the description as free text, so the collection page cannot filter on it. A grandparent shopping for a four-year-old opens thirty products to find six that suit. Most give up around product eight.
The second is Shopify’s one featured image per variant. One. A plush in six characters, a scooter in four colours: pick one and the gallery either does not react or shows something else. The mechanics are in our complete guide to Shopify variant images.
By hand this works at thirty products. At a thousand SKUs before the Christmas intake, it does not, which is why an app that assigns a whole image set per colourway and filters the gallery on click exists at all. Free to install, 5.0 stars across 410 reviews, and yes, that one is ours. Our free variant combination calculator will show you what your own catalogue is carrying.

Loox Product Reviews: 4.9 stars, 8,803 reviews
Photo and video reviews are worth more here than in any category we have covered. A studio shot tells a parent nothing about scale. A blurry phone video of a five-year-old using the thing tells them it survives a five-year-old, which was the only question.
Loox is built around collecting exactly that: request emails, QR codes, discount incentives for photo submissions, and widgets that sync to the Shop app and Google Shopping. The free Beginner tier includes both.
Where it stops: video reviews sit on the Convert tier at $49.99/month, which includes 300 orders and then charges $50 per additional 300. For a seasonal store, that bill spikes when you are busiest. Judge.me is the cheaper comparison at 5.0 stars across 42,524 reviews, with unlimited photo and video reviews free. We rank the category in our Shopify review apps roundup.
Kaching Bundles: 5.0 stars, 4,975 reviews
Toys bundle better than almost anything. A track set plus two extra cars. A board game plus its first expansion. Three plush characters at a set price, which is how you move the one nobody picks alone. Kaching does fixed bundles, mix-and-match sets and quantity breaks, and stays focused.
Starter is $14.99/month, Scale $29.99, Pro $59.99, banded by the extra revenue the app generates.
Where it stops: the listing shows free installs for development stores only, so there is no free path on a live shop. If a permanent free tier is the requirement, Bundler Product Bundles is 4.9 stars across 2,462 reviews with a genuinely free plan, though mix-and-match sits on its $8.99/month tier. Both in our Shopify bundle apps roundup.
Notify Me! Back in Stock Alert: 4.9 stars, 3,453 reviews
Three jobs in one app, and toy stores need all three. Preorders for collectibles that have not shipped. Restock alerts by email, SMS or push for the ones that sold out. And a wishlist, which here is how a child builds a birthday list and how a parent finds it in November.
It also does the “only 3 left” counter, honest when the number is real and cynical when it is not.
Where it stops: the free Lite tier is a trial rather than a plan, at 10 restock notifications, 5 preorders and 50 wishlist actions. Kickstart is $9.90/month and charges $0.20 per preorder above the limit, a real cost on a drop that goes well. STOQ is the closest alternative at 5.0 stars across 3,424 reviews. Both are in our back in stock apps roundup.
Searchanise Search and Filter: 4.7 stars, 1,067 reviews
The app that fixes the age problem, and the one most toy stores skip. Filters for age range, brand, price and player count turn a 900-product catalogue into something a shopper can work through. Searchanise adds instant search, collection filters, product labels and add-to-cart from results.
The part worth being annoyed about: an age filter only works if age lives in a structured field. Type “Ages 4 to 7” into a description and no filter on earth can read it. Which is why the next app is here.
Where it stops: 4.7 is the lowest rating here, and its free plan covers development stores and shops up to 25 products, so it is a trial. Basic is $19/month to 1,500 products, Essential $39/month to 7,500, and Plus starts at $49/month for the same 1,500. Alternatives in our search and filter apps roundup.
Rubik Variant Images (ours): 5.0 stars, 410 reviews
This is one we build, so read it with that in mind. It attaches as many photographs as you want to each variant and filters the gallery so picking the red scooter shows the red scooter. It adds colour, image or text swatches to the picker, which for character variants means a tiny face on each swatch instead of a dropdown reading Character 1, Character 2, Character 3. Since May 2026 those swatches can appear on product cards in collection results too. Metafield-based, no external API calls, natively on 350+ themes.

AI auto-assign matters most here because of the seasonal intake. Hundreds of SKUs arrive at once, each with a folder of supplier photos, and assigning them by hand is a week nobody has in September. It reads product name, variant name, image filename and alt text to match photos to variants, one product at a time. More in apps for stores with many colour variants.
“So glad i discovered this app, perfect for my bead kit variants and showing the different colour options. Turan was a great help and guided me through step by step on how to make changes to the font colours etc. Thank you so much, great customer service :)”

Where it is the wrong pick: 410 reviews against Loox’s 8,803 is a much shorter track record, so if that is your first filter, we lose. It covers one product’s own variants only, and will not build your age filters. Free plan covers one product, Starter is $25/month for 100. Poke at the live demo store or the getting started docs before installing.
Metafields Guru: 5.0 stars, 218 reviews
Unglamorous and load-bearing. Age grading, choking-hazard warnings, battery requirements, player count, play time: all of it belongs in a structured metafield, not a paragraph. Then filters can read it, your theme displays it consistently, and your feeds carry it.
Metafields Guru gives you a bulk editor, an Excel-like grid, CSV import and export, and theme blocks that display metafields without code. When a thousand products need the same six fields populated, bulk editing is the point.
Where it stops: it is a data tool, not a merchandising one. It will not make anything look better, and the ROOKIE tier is free to install but bills $1 per 1,000 app credits once the included credits run out. ADEPT is $9/month, GURU $19, GURU PLUS $59. While you are in there, run your barcodes through our free barcode and UPC validator, because toy feeds get rejected on bad GTINs more than on anything else.
Rubik Combined Listings (ours): 5.0 stars, 63 reviews
Also ours, and the smallest listing here. Toy catalogues split constantly, because each edition has its own barcode, supplier and arrival date, so Standard and Deluxe become two products. Sensible for inventory, ugly on a collection page showing the same box twice. Rubik Combined Listings joins them into one listing with swatches under the product cards, so a shopper switches edition without leaving the grid.
“Great app and the customer service was insane. They answer quickly and even uploaded a Youtube video just to explain how solve on of our problems. The app is also great, has every functionality you could need.”
Vista, France, 2026-02-20, Rubik Combined Listings reviews on the Shopify App Store
Where it is the wrong pick: 63 reviews is the shortest track record here by a distance, and if your editions are already variants you do not need it. Free plan covers 5 groups, Starter $10/month for 100. Which shape to use is genuinely arguable, and we take both sides in do I need variant images or combined listings and in combined listings without Shopify Plus. There is a demo store and docs too.
How to choose, in one rule
Open your own store on a phone and try to buy a present for a four-year-old. Whatever defeats you is what you fix first.
- You cannot narrow the catalogue by age: a data problem first (Metafields Guru), then a filter problem (Searchanise).
- Picking a colour or character does not change the photos: Rubik Variant Images.
- The same box appears three times in the grid: Rubik Combined Listings.
- Sold-out drops send traffic nowhere: Notify Me!, preorder and waitlist on every one.
- Parents cannot tell if it is worth the money: Loox, photo reviews on the free tier.
- Order value is stuck at one item: Kaching Bundles, starter sets first.
Do the boring one first. Structured age data takes a week and makes three other apps work, and every toy store we have looked at left it in the description instead. Fix that before buying a filter app, or you pay $19 a month for a filter with nothing to filter on.
A warning that bites hardest in a seasonal category: each app is a monthly bill and a page-weight cost forever, including the quiet months. Score the page with our free product page grader, read the hidden cost of free Shopify apps, and if your catalogue is large, our notes on running a store with 1,000+ products apply directly here.
Frequently asked questions
Which app should I use to show different photos for each toy colour or character?
Rubik Variant Images, which assigns a separate image set to every variant and filters the product gallery when a shopper picks a colourway. It sits at 5.0 stars across 410 reviews, is free to install for one product, and runs natively on 350+ themes. If your editions or colours are separate products rather than variants, use Rubik Combined Listings, at 5.0 stars across 63 reviews.
How do I add an age filter to a Shopify toy store?
Two steps, in order. Store the age grade as a structured product metafield rather than description text, using something like Metafields Guru for bulk editing. Then point a filter app such as Searchanise at that field. Skipping step one is why most age filters never work.
What is the best way to handle preorders for collectibles?
A preorder app that works at variant level, so one sold-out figure takes preorders while the rest of the range keeps its normal add-to-cart. Notify Me! Back in Stock Alert covers preorders, restock alerts and wishlists at 4.9 stars across 3,453 reviews. Watch the per-preorder charge above your plan limit.
Where should safety warnings go on a toy product page?
In a structured metafield rendered in a fixed position on every product page, not buried mid-description. Consistency is the point: a parent should find the choking-hazard line in the same place every time, and a feed should be able to carry it.
How many apps does a toy store actually need?
Four, one more than most categories, because filtering and preorders are both load-bearing here. Reviews, filters, preorders, and one that fixes how variants display. Stores running eight apps rarely convert better than stores running four.
