How to turn off Shopify agentic storefronts and opt out of ChatGPT

How to turn off Shopify agentic storefronts and opt out of ChatGPT

Short answer: To turn off Shopify agentic storefronts, go to Sales channels > Agentic, switch off “Allow Shopify to manage for me”, then turn off “Shopify Catalog access” for all third party channels, or click ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot or Meta AI and Muse to stop just one. Save. Shopify says sharing can take up to 7 days to stop.

There are good reasons to want out, and bad ones. Picture a store whose analytics stopped adding up after AI orders started arriving through a checkout its pixels can’t see. Or a brand that sells customizable products and doesn’t want a channel taking orders it can’t fulfil the normal way. Or a founder who simply read “your products are shared by default” and wants to know what they agreed to.

All fair. But “turn it off” covers four different switches in Shopify’s admin, and they do very different things. One stops a single channel. One stops checkout but keeps discovery. One stops every third party AI channel at once. And one, the one people reach for first, doesn’t stop anything at all.

Here they are, with the exact paths from Shopify’s help centre as of October 2026.

What does each agentic storefronts switch actually do?

Every switch lives on one page, Sales channels > Agentic, and only appears once “Allow Shopify to manage for me” is off. Shopify’s managing agentic storefronts page defines them like this.

SwitchWhat it controlsTurning it off means
Allow Shopify to manage for meOn by default: all channels active, auto-enrolment in new ones, direct checkout on where offeredNothing stops yet. It unlocks the switches below
Shopify Catalog access (store-wide)Whether third party agentic storefronts can reach your products through Shopify CatalogExisting and future third party access stops; direct checkout is deactivated too. Shop is not affected
Auto enroll new storefrontsAutomatic enrolment in channels Shopify adds laterYou keep current channels and opt into new ones by hand
Shopify Catalog access (per channel)One channel: ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or Meta AI and MuseThat channel stops receiving your products through Catalog
Direct checkout (per channel)Buying inside Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, or MetaShoppers still find you there but are sent to your online store to pay
Other channels > Shopify Catalog accessA group of smaller and emerging AI agentsThat whole group loses Catalog access

ChatGPT has no direct checkout switch at all. Shopify’s ChatGPT page says customers are redirected to buy in your online store checkout, in a ChatGPT in-app browser or a new tab, and that there are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT beyond standard payment processing. If a guide tells you to “disable Instant Checkout”, it’s out of date; our post on ChatGPT checkout and the 4% fee that never arrived has the history.

How to turn off Shopify agentic storefronts for every channel

This is the full opt-out for third party AI channels. Shopify’s steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic.
  2. Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me.
  3. Turn off Shopify Catalog access to remove existing and future Catalog access for third party channels. (To keep current channels but stop new ones, turn off Auto enroll new storefronts instead.)
  4. Click Save.

You need to be the store owner or have the Products > View and App and sales channel > Agentic staff permissions to see the page. If it isn’t there at all, our post on Agentic storefronts not showing in the admin runs the causes.

How do I opt out of ChatGPT only?

Per channel, from the ChatGPT page’s opt-out section:

  1. Go to Sales channels > Agentic.
  2. Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me.
  3. Click ChatGPT.
  4. Turn off Shopify Catalog access.
  5. Click Save.

Every other channel keeps running. Is that what you actually want, though? Because ChatGPT is the one channel where Shopify takes no checkout away from you: the sale already happens on your own store, with your branding, your customizations and your payment methods. If your worry is checkout, ChatGPT is the wrong channel to switch off.

Copilot, Meta, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Shop

Microsoft Copilot. Same path, click Microsoft Copilot, then turn off Shopify Catalog access to leave entirely, or turn off Direct checkout to keep discovery and send buyers to your store. Save. Shopify’s Copilot page has both.

Meta. Click Meta AI and Muse and use the same two switches. Shopify’s Meta page notes that removing Catalog access there doesn’t affect products shown through Shopify Catalog elsewhere, such as Shop, and that products might still reach Meta through web crawling.

Google AI Mode and Gemini. Different plumbing. Shopify’s Google page says discovery there is powered by Google Merchant Center (through the Google & YouTube channel, a feed provider or manual upload), and the only switch it documents on the Agentic page is Direct checkout: click Google AI Mode and Gemini, turn it off, Save. Products “can still be discovered” but can’t be bought there. Shopify’s page doesn’t describe a way to hide products from AI Mode or Gemini entirely, so we won’t invent one; that lives on the Merchant Center side.

Shop. Shopify’s own channel isn’t on the list. The managing page says Shop has no option to deactivate Catalog access in the Agentic section; you manage it in the Shop sales channel settings.

Just some products? Set them to Unlisted, or use the seo.hidden metafield. Shopify says either keeps a product out of Shop and every third party agentic storefront. The cost is real: Unlisted also hides the product from sitemaps, Google and your own store search. Our explainer on Shopify’s Unlisted product status covers the trade-off. And no, robots.txt doesn’t do this job. Shopify’s product discovery page says blocking AI crawlers “affects only open-web discoverability”, not Catalog. The robots.txt generator is the right tool for the crawler side, and our rubikify.com post asks whether blocking AI bots is ever worth it.

How long does opting out take, and what stays shared?

Shopify’s wording, on the managing, ChatGPT and Copilot pages alike: “It can take up to 7 days before your product data is no longer being shared through Shopify Catalog.” Seven days. Not instant. The Meta page gives no timing.

Three things keep going after you switch off, and Shopify says so itself:

  1. Your products stay in Shopify Catalog. The data sharing and privacy page says removing access “doesn’t remove your products from Shopify Catalog”; they remain available for uses such as storefront search and Shop.
  2. Web crawling continues. “When access is deactivated, your products can still be discovered through web crawling and indexing.” The data is just less complete and less current.
  3. Past sharing. Shopify’s pages don’t say whether data already shared is deleted. They describe the change as applying “going forward”.

What you do lose: that channel’s Catalog feed of your title, description, images, price and availability, which is the complete and current version of your product an agent can work with. And direct checkout, where the channel offers it. Changed your mind? Turning “Allow Shopify to manage for me” back on reactivates all settings, direct checkout included.

When is opting out reasonable?

Our honest take: for most direct to consumer stores, opting out of discovery is a mistake, and a quiet one. You don’t get a warning, you just stop appearing when a shopper asks an assistant for exactly what you sell. Shopify charges nothing extra for ChatGPT, and the crawl path keeps a less accurate copy of your products in circulation anyway. So you’re not really leaving. You’re just handing the agent a worse description of yourself.

Turning off direct checkout is a different story, and often sensible. It’s the narrower switch, and it addresses most of the real complaints:

  • Tracking. Shopify says Google Analytics and custom pixels won’t fire in the direct checkouts of Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta; only server-to-server pixels (started, completed) do. If your attribution depends on browser pixels, that matters. Our guide to tracking AI search traffic in GA4 covers what you can still see.
  • Unsupported products. Copilot’s direct checkout doesn’t support subscriptions, product bundles, customizable products or B2B-only products, nor local delivery, pickup in store or pickup points, and it can’t require customers to sign in.
  • Customer data. With direct checkout on, the channel has access to order details such as the customer’s name, email address, phone number and physical address. With Catalog access only, buyers are redirected to your store.

A full opt-out makes more sense when a product line genuinely can’t be described or sold correctly by an agent (Shopify asks for legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters of a description, and some products sort of can’t meet that cleanly) or when contract terms with a brand or distributor forbid the channel. Even then, Unlisted on the affected products is usually more precise than switching off the whole store.

Before you decide, look at the numbers Shopify already gives you. The Agentic page shows Sales, Orders, Online store sessions and Online store conversion for each AI channel. Ten seconds. If a channel sends real orders, you’re about to switch off revenue. If it sends nothing, check why first: our post on products not showing in ChatGPT often turns “this channel is useless” into “this channel never saw my catalog”. And if you stay, the AI readiness checker and our sister site’s guide to image coverage as an AI listing signal are where the easy wins are.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn off Shopify agentic storefronts?

Go to Sales channels > Agentic, turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me, turn off Shopify Catalog access, and click Save. That removes existing and future Catalog access for third party AI channels. Shop, Shopify’s own channel, is managed separately in the Shop sales channel.

How long does it take to stop sharing products with ChatGPT?

Up to 7 days. Shopify says it can take up to 7 days before your product data is no longer being shared through Shopify Catalog. ChatGPT can still find your products through web crawling after that.

Can I keep my products in AI channels but turn off checkout?

Yes, for Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. Turn off Direct checkout for that channel and shoppers are redirected to your online store to buy. ChatGPT has no direct checkout to turn off: purchases already happen on your own store.

Can I hide only some products from AI channels?

Yes, with the Unlisted status or the seo.hidden metafield, which keep a product out of Shop and every third party agentic storefront. Unlisted also hides the product from sitemaps, Google and your store search, so use it only where that trade-off is acceptable.

Does blocking AI bots in robots.txt opt me out?

No. Shopify says blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt or at the network layer affects only open-web discoverability. Shopify Catalog sharing is controlled on the Agentic page.

How do I turn agentic storefronts back on?

Turn Allow Shopify to manage for me back on. Shopify says this reactivates all settings, including direct checkout. You can also switch Shopify Catalog access back on for a single channel.

Switch off checkout if checkout is the problem; switch off a channel only if the channel is. And if the real question is whether AI assistants were ever showing your products at all, see what ChatGPT sees on a Shopify product before you decide.
