Best Shopify themes for clothing brands 2026 (free + paid)

Clothing stores have specific theme requirements that generic “best Shopify themes” lists miss entirely. You need a theme that handles large image galleries without slowing down. A theme that renders color swatches properly for 15+ colorways. A theme where the variant picker does not push the add-to-cart button below the fold on mobile when you have Color, Size, and Fit options.
Our reviews of the top Shopify themes for clothing stores. We evaluated each theme based on what really matters, like how well they display variants, gallery quality, mobile responsiveness, page load time, and swatch support. Not generic design scores.

What matters in a clothing brand theme
Before comparing themes, here is what to evaluate for a clothing store specifically:
- Image gallery. Clothing sells on photos. The gallery needs to handle 8+ images per product with zoom, swipe on mobile, and ideally variant image filtering (showing only the selected color’s photos).
- Variant picker. Color swatches are a must. Dropdowns for color options are a conversion killer for apparel. The picker should handle 3 option types (Color + Size + Fit) without overflowing the page.
- Mobile UX. Over 70% of fashion e-commerce traffic is mobile. Swipeable galleries, sticky add-to-cart, and proper tap target sizes matter more for clothing than any other category.
- Speed. Clothing stores have more images per product than any other category. A slow-loading gallery kills the experience. The theme needs efficient image loading (lazy load, responsive srcset, WebP support).
- Collection page layout. Filtering by color, size, and category. Product cards that show color swatches without clicking into the product page.
Best free themes
1. Dawn
Shopify’s free theme. Very minimalist yet stylish for basic e-commerce websites. Dawn 14.0+ supports native color swatch. The image gallery in Dawn has a grid view option for customers. Good base for a fashion website that requires a cost-effective theme for a new clothing brand.
Limitations for clothing: The default gallery layout is pretty basic, there is no zoom on hover in older versions, there are some limitations with swatch customization, and there is no built-in gallery filtering for variant images. An app like Rubik Variant Images fills these gaps on Dawn. We have a dedicated guide on adding color swatches to Dawn.
2. Sense
Free – A free Shopify theme that is perfect for brands with a story or message. The Free Shopify theme features clean typography, full width imagery and a simple structure that highlights your products. Great for clothing stores that have an editorial focus and emphasis on brand storytelling.
Product gallery can have multiple layouts, a stacked image view is great for showing out fits, variant picker defaults to pill/dropdown, you can add color swatches with an app.
3. Craft
Free theme. A simple theme which focusses on the products and is suitable for smaller fashion clothing stores with a limited number of products. The product pages are simply laid out to show as much information as possible and the collection pages have a neat grid to display 4 products per row instead of the standard 3. This makes it suitable for stores with up to 50 products.
Best paid themes
4. Prestige ($350)
A premium theme suitable for fashion and luxury stores. Includes color swatches, elegant typography and gallery with lookbook options. The product page already looks premium without much need for customization. Documentation for prestige swatches is solid.
Best for: mid-to-high-end clothing designers who want an out of the box solution with built-in swatch display and don’t need to upload swatches to an app to see colours. Apps still add value for image filtering and advanced swatch customization.
5. Impulse ($380)
Feature-rich theme to help convert more sales! Comes with pre-defined colors, product badges, quick buy options and a very powerful collection page with filters. Gallery functionality allows for image zoom as well as video. Perfect for high volume fashion apparel stores with hundreds of products.
The variant picker works well when you have multiple options and the collection page product cards render with color swatch dots. The theme is feature heavy, but seems to render ok. You may lose a few points on Lighthouse if you load too many apps with this theme.
6. Broadcast ($360)
Modern, on-trend for streetwear and modern fashion brands. Clean, simple 2 or 3 column layouts with large typography and product video support on product pages. The product gallery has plenty of room to feature both video and images in a format that is natural to Instagram shoppers.
Broadcast has basic swatch support but it defaults to 28px which is just too small for a colour-heavy catalog. Having it slightly larger makes for a far better experience, and increasing swatch size with CSS or an app improves the experience significantly.
7. Horizon ($300)
The only Shopify theme that makes sense for a magazine type store. Supports side by side product gallery images with details on the right (image left, details right) perfect for clothing stores. Horizon theme supports swatches and clean variant picker. We have several tutorials on displaying images in product variants for this theme.
Horizon is highly optimized for performance and is based on the latest architecture patterns that Shopify has to offer. A great option for brands and businesses looking for a super premium theme with the full support of Shopify behind it.

Swatch and variant support by theme
Even themes with “native swatch support” is pretty funny, because what does “native swatch support” even mean? That some circles populated with swatches of colors will appear? Or that you’ll be able to add image swatches and change the color from a handy hex input? Or can even be told that a sold out variant exists? Here’s what each theme supports natively versus what some app will help you do:
| Feature | Dawn 14+ | Prestige | Impulse | Horizon | With Rubik VI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Color circles | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Image swatches | No | Limited | No | No | Yes |
| Custom hex colors | No | Via metafield | No | No | Yes |
| Variant image filtering | No | No | No | No | Yes |
| Swatch size control | No | Limited | No | No | Yes (100+ CSS vars) |
| Sold-out swatch handling | Basic | Basic | Basic | Basic | Full (hide/grey/cross) |
Theme will handle rendering of swatches for basic patterns, but for image swatches, custom borders, or variant images, this app will extend capabilities of any theme. For rendering swatches on collection pages (linked products), this app Rubik Combined Listings extends the capabilities of any theme to enable swipeable swatches on collection pages.

“Hands Down the best customer support of all the variation/swatch apps I have used till date. The app does everything. From individual variant gallery to really detailed customizable swatch’s. All in a single app. Originally we used to use two different apps so this is so much more cost efficient for us.”

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free Shopify theme for clothing?
Dawn is the free option here and it is really fast, Shopify friendly and it now supports native colour swatches (as of 14.0). For those with more of an editorial focus I really like Sense for its typography heavy and storytelling orientated approach.
Do I need a paid theme for a clothing store?
While there are loads of free themes, many of them (like the one shown in screenshot 1 above, Dawn) are designed to complement your apps by creating swatches, image filters or even collection swatches. Others can save you hours of tweaking just to arrive at a decent looking interface while also offering a more custom default look to begin with. This could be enough to justify the expenses if your brand image requires a very specific visual identity.
Which theme has the best color swatch support for clothing?
Prestige has the most complete native swatch set of any of the listed themes. It is still lacking image swatches and the inability to filter variant images. The best way to customize swatches, no matter what theme you use, is with the Rubik Variant Images widget.
Does the theme affect page speed for clothing stores?
Yes. Many themes have a lot of Java Script to handle things like animations and parallax scrolling. Also, some themes have video backgrounds which increase the loading time of a store quite a bit. For store with a lot of images per product such as a clothing store, you may find that a simple theme (Dawn, Horizon) performs best. But again, the most impotent factor to consider with store speed is image optimization.
Can I switch themes without losing my product data?
Yes. Products, collections, and pages are stored in your Shopify account and are not contained within a theme. This means that your store, its content, and its functionality will not change when you switch to a different theme. Typically, the only customization that would be needed after switching to a new theme would be to update theme configuration options that are specific to that particular theme such as menu behavior, featured collection settings, and arrangement of home pages.
