AI referral traffic to ecommerce: 2026 numbers

AI referral traffic to ecommerce: 2026 numbers

Short answer: AI referral traffic to ecommerce is small in share and large in growth. Shopify reports AI traffic and orders tripling year over year in Q2 2026, Adobe reports AI-referred US retail visits converting 60% better than other traffic in July 2026, and Similarweb puts generative AI at 0.4% of retail visits. Every figure links to its source.

Most “AI traffic statistics” pages are a chain of copies: a blog quotes a blog that quoted a slide. By the fourth hop the number has grown a decimal place and lost its date. This page is the opposite. Every statistic here was read on the page linked next to it on October 15, 2026, and if we could only find a figure in a news report of a primary source we could not open, we say “reported by” and name the outlet. Anything we could not see is not here.

Shopify’s figures

Shopify is the only platform publishing AI referral numbers for its merchants, and it does so in two places: its earnings calls and its own blog. The Q1 2026 figures appear in Shopify’s June 18, 2026 post on how agentic commerce works: “In Q1 2026, AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores grew 8 times year over year, while orders from AI-powered searches increased nearly 13 times. New buyers are placing orders through AI channels at nearly twice the rate of other channels.”

The Q2 2026 call in August brought the growth rate down to “tripled year-over-year,” which is not a slowdown so much as a bigger base, and added three structural figures: 75% of AI-attributed orders from outside the top 100 categories, half of AI-referred sessions landing directly on a product page (2.5 times the rate for traditional search), and AI searches powered by Shopify Catalog converting at twice the rate of searches using scraped data. President Harley Finkelstein’s framing on the call: “AI as a complement to search rather than a substitute for it.” We unpack the long tail figure in why 75% of Shopify AI orders are long-tail products.

Two cautions. These are growth rates and shares of AI orders, never shares of total orders; Shopify has not published what fraction of its GMV is AI attributed. And the Spring ’26 Edition line, “Data syndicated by Shopify drives 2x more conversion in AI chats,” comes with no published methodology, so quote it as Shopify’s claim.

Adobe Analytics figures

Adobe publishes monthly AI referral data for US retail from Adobe Analytics, which TechCrunch describes as covering more than 1 trillion visits to US retail sites. We could not open Adobe’s own PDFs, so every Adobe figure here is as reported by the named outlet, which is why the table says so.

The trend across the year is the useful part. In March 2025, per TechCrunch’s April 16, 2026 report, AI traffic “converted 38% worse than regular people.” In March 2026 it “converted 42% better.” By May 2026 Digital Commerce 360 reported AI-referred traffic converting “54% better” than non-AI traffic, and by July, “60% higher,” with July marking “the 11th straight month that AI traffic outperformed non-AI traffic in conversion.” Growth in visits slowed as the base grew: +393% year over year in Q1 2026, +138% in May, +62% in July.

Digital Commerce 360’s August 19 piece also carries Adobe’s behaviour figures from its June 17 report: AI-referred visitors “spend 59% more time on site,” “bounce 33% less,” and “add items to their cart 28% more than other shoppers,” and in July they “generate 53% more revenue per visit.” The same June report included an audit of retailer homepages for machine readability: Adobe found 39% of the homepages in its sample were not machine-readable, with visibility by category at apparel 76%, electronics 70%, cosmetics 68%, sporting goods 67%, furniture and home 64%, general merchandise 63%, grocery 59%.

Similarweb figures

Similarweb’s State of Ecommerce 2026 report is the best source for share rather than growth, and the share is sobering: generative AI “sends just 0.4% of retail ecommerce visits today.” The same report says “Gen AI referrals grew 203% YoY,” that “1 in 4 shoppers use AI before buying,” and that “shopper journeys involving both AI and Search end up converting at 23%, which is 84% higher than using AI alone.” Read those together and the picture is clear: AI is a research step in a journey that still ends through search or direct, which is exactly Shopify’s “complement, not substitute” line from a different dataset.

Similarweb’s 2025 press release (September 15, 2025) is the source of a number that gets quoted without its year: “Similarweb estimates the conversion rate for visits referred by ChatGPT is 11.4%, compared with 5.3% for organic search.” It is a 2025 estimate. Label it as one.

Bain consumer survey

Bain’s November 13, 2025 press release is survey data, not traffic data, and it’s the best read on intent. “30% to 45% of US consumers currently use Generative AI for product research and comparison,” while “around half still say they are cautious about letting AI agents autonomously handle purchases from start to finish.” Ahead of the 2025 holidays, “17% of unique online shoppers say they will begin their holiday shopping with an AI platform such as ChatGPT or Perplexity,” and “30% plan to start with Google search, which is now also AI-enabled.”

Bain also gives the clearest statement of the share problem: “AI now accounts for up to 25% of referral traffic for some retailers,” “though it is still less than 1% of total traffic.” And one line for anyone building a shopping agent: “Consumers currently trust retailers’ on-site agents three times more” than third-party ones, per the release’s framing.

What Google says about ranking in AI features

Not a traffic figure, but it belongs next to them because so many “AI SEO” statistics pages imply the opposite. Google’s documentation on AI features in Search states: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” And: “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features.” And: “There’s also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add.” If a statistic is being used to sell you an llms.txt generator, that is the page to read first. Our rubikify.com post on whether to block AI bots covers the one thing that does matter on the crawler side.

How to read these numbers

  • Growth and share are different claims. “3x” (Shopify) and “0.4%” (Similarweb) are both true. A channel can triple and still be tiny.
  • Conversion comparisons depend on the base. Adobe’s AI visitors convert better than the average visitor; the average includes every bounce from every ad. That is still a real signal of intent, it is just not “AI shoppers buy more than your best customers.”
  • Platform figures describe that platform. Shopify’s numbers are Shopify stores with Shopify Catalog feeding the assistants. They do not transfer to a store on another platform.
  • Half of AI sessions land on a product page. That is Shopify’s own figure, and it means the page has to match what the assistant promised: the right colour, the right price, in stock. For variant-heavy stores, variant-specific image sets are what keep that landing honest.
  • Dates matter more than usual. The Adobe conversion gap flipped sign in twelve months. A 2025 figure can be the opposite of a 2026 one.
  • Your own number beats all of these. Shopify’s Agentic page shows sales per AI channel for your store, and a GA4 channel group shows the sessions; here is how to set that up. Our AI readiness checker and AI bot checker cover the page side.

Numbers we deliberately left out because we could not find a primary source we could read: any daily count of ChatGPT shopping queries, any “AI referrals convert 4x” style rounding, any count of merchants live on OpenAI’s Instant Checkout, and any figure about the Shopify Catalog’s size beyond Shopify’s own “billions of products across millions of merchants.” If you have a primary source for one of those, we’d like to see it.

Frequently asked questions

What share of ecommerce traffic comes from AI in 2026?

Small. Similarweb’s State of Ecommerce 2026 report says generative AI sends 0.4% of retail ecommerce visits; Bain’s November 2025 release says AI is under 1% of total traffic even where it reaches 25% of referral traffic for some retailers. Growth rates are high (Shopify 3x year over year in Q2 2026, Adobe +62% in July 2026) because the base is small.

Does AI referral traffic convert better than search?

In 2026, yes, by the published measures. Adobe Analytics data reported by Digital Commerce 360 shows AI-referred US retail traffic converting 60% better than non-AI traffic in July 2026, the 11th straight month ahead, after converting 38% worse in March 2025. Shopify reported AI search conversion nearly 80% higher than traditional organic search on its Q2 2026 call.

How much AI traffic do Shopify stores get?

Shopify publishes growth, not share: 8x AI-driven traffic and nearly 13x AI orders year over year in Q1 2026, and both tripling in Q2 2026. Three quarters of Q2 AI-attributed orders came from outside Shopify’s top 100 categories. Your own store’s figure is on the Agentic page in the admin.

What is the conversion rate of ChatGPT referral traffic?

The most quoted figure is Similarweb’s September 2025 estimate of 11.4% for ChatGPT-referred visits against 5.3% for organic search. It is a 2025 estimate across Similarweb’s panel, not a 2026 figure and not a Shopify figure. Treat it as directional.

How do I measure AI referral traffic for my own store?

On Shopify, Sales channels, Agentic shows sales, orders, sessions and conversion per AI channel. In GA4, build a custom channel group with a regex on the AI referrer domains and place it at the top of the rule order. Both are free and take under an hour.

Change log: none yet. First published October 15, 2026. If one of these figures is superseded, the table row will say so with the new date. The question the numbers can’t answer for you is whether an assistant names your products at all, and that one you can check in ten minutes.
