How to Display Different Images for Multiple Variant Combinations in Shopify

Short answer: Shopify allows one featured image per variant, so a product with two option sets cannot show the photo for a specific pair like Blue plus Red. Rubik Variant Images, built by Craftshift, assigns images to several options at once and displays only the photos matching every option selected. Free to install, 5.0 stars across 420 reviews.

A complete guide to showing the exact product image when customers select multiple options like Color + Style, Stone 1 + Stone 2, or Material + Size.

The Multi-Option Variant Problem

The short version: Shopify stores one featured image per variant, and themes filter the gallery on one option at a time if they filter it at all. Rubik Variant Images assigns each photo to values across several options and shows only the images matching every selection. It is free for one product, 5.0 stars across 420 reviews.

If you sell products with multiple variant options on Shopify, you’ve probably run into a frustrating limitation. Standard Shopify functionality and most variant-image apps only let you assign images to a single option, typically color.

But what happens when your product images depend on multiple options?

Picture a two stone ring. A shopper picks Blue for Stone 1 and Red for Stone 2. That pair looks nothing like Blue plus Blue or Red plus Red, but Shopify has no idea: it can hold one featured image for a variant, and the theme gallery goes on showing every photo on the product. The shopper scrolls through sixteen rings looking for theirs, and half of them give up or, worse, order and return it.

The Solution: Multi-Option Variant Images

Unlike other variant-image apps that filter by a single option, Rubik lets you assign images to multiple variant options simultaneously. When a customer selects “Blue” for Stone 1 AND “Red” for Stone 2, they see the exact product image for that combination, not just images filtered by a single option.

The app calculates the intersection of all your image assignments and automatically displays only the relevant images for any combination your customers select. Doing that by hand is not an option, since the theme has no concept of a combination, so the practical route is to assign each photo to values across two or three options and let the gallery narrow to their intersection. Assigning Shopify product images to multiple variant options at once in Rubik Variant Images

Two details worth knowing before you start. Images you leave unassigned stay visible for every combination, which is how lifestyle shots and size charts survive the filtering. And the assignment lives in Shopify metafields rather than on our servers, so the storefront reads data the page already loaded instead of waiting on an external call.

Perfect For Stores Selling

  • Jewelry with multiple stones or gems
  • Furniture with Color + Material options
  • Apparel with Color + Style combinations
  • Customizable products with 2-3 variant options
  • Any product where the image changes based on multiple selections

Step-by-Step Setup Guide

Setting up multi-option variant images is straightforward. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Select Your Product in Rubik

After installing the app that filters your gallery per variant combination, open it from your Shopify admin and select the product you want to configure. The app will display all your product images and variant options.

Step 2: Assign Images to Your First Option

Start by assigning images to your first variant option. For example, if you have “Stone 1” with Red, Green, Purple, and Blue options, select all images that contain a red stone and assign them to “Red.” Repeat for each color.

Pro tip: Leave lifestyle photos and common images unassigned; they’ll remain visible for all variant combinations.

Step 3: Assign Images to Your Second Option

Now assign images to your second option (e.g., “Stone 2”). Select all images containing a red second stone and assign them to “Red,” and so on for each value.

As you make assignments, you’ll see the preview panel on the right side showing the image intersection for each combination. This lets you verify that the correct images will display for every possible selection.

Step 4: Save and Activate

Click Save to store your configuration. Then navigate to “Enable on Theme Editor” and click Save in the theme editor (no changes needed, just save). That’s it! Your multi-option variant images are now live.

If your catalog is bigger than a handful of products, do not do this by hand. Two shortcuts exist: AI auto-assign works one product at a time and reads the product title, option name, option values, image filename and alt text, plus the image itself, and bulk assign groups images by their order in the Shopify gallery across hundreds of products in the background. Different tools for different messes. There is a full walkthrough of adding multiple images to a Shopify variant if you want the single option version first.

Bonus: Adding Custom Color Swatches

Rubik also includes a swatch feature that replaces Shopify’s default variant selectors with visual swatches. You can use images from your product gallery or upload custom swatch images.

Setting Up Swatches

  1. Go to “Manage Swatch Settings” in the Rubik app
  2. Enable swatches and activate them on your theme
  3. Add your option names (e.g., “Stone 1” and “Stone 2”)
  4. Upload custom swatch images for each option value
  5. Customize the appearance, choose circle or rounded shapes, and adjust the size.

Swatch configuration is stored in Shopify metafields with no external API calls, and the storefront widget renders inside a shadow DOM so your theme CSS and ours cannot fight each other. Over 100 CSS variables are exposed if you want to push the styling further than the visual editor allows. If you want to test colour combinations before committing, our free swatch style preview tool and the color palette generator both run in the browser with nothing to install.

Worth saying plainly: swatches are optional here. The image filtering works with your theme’s own variant selector. Merchants often turn swatches on anyway, because two dropdowns reading Stone 1 and Stone 2 is a worse experience than two rows of actual stones. There is a longer guide to variant image swatches on product pages, and a deeper walkthrough of swatch customisation on the app site.

Where This Approach Runs Out

Three honest limits, because finding them after you have configured 200 products is a bad afternoon.

First, you still need the photographs. If Blue plus Red exists as a purchasable combination but nobody shot it, no app can conjure the image, and the shopper falls back to whatever is unassigned. Second, Shopify gives you three option types per product, so if your product genuinely needs a fourth choice you are into product options territory, which is a different category of app entirely.

Third, and this is the one people get wrong most often: if each colour of your product already lives as its own separate product with its own URL, this is not the tool. Filtering happens inside one product page. Linking separate products together and putting swatches on the collection page is what Rubik Combined Listings groups separate products into one listing with swatches does instead. We wrote a whole post on which of the two you actually need, because roughly a third of support conversations start with someone who installed the other one.

Why Multi-Option Variant Images Matter for Your Business

Implementing proper variant images for multiple options delivers real business results:

Higher Conversion Rates

When customers see exactly what they’re buying, they make purchasing decisions with confidence. No more scrolling through dozens of irrelevant images trying to find their specific combination.

Lower Return Rates

Returns often happen because the delivered product doesn’t match customer expectations. By showing the precise product image for each combination, you eliminate the confusion that leads to “not as pictured” returns.

Better Advertising ROI

You can create targeted ads for specific variant combinations and drive customers directly to a clean product page that shows only the relevant images. Ad creative and landing page finally show the same object, which is harder to get right than it sounds. We wrote about the wrong variant image showing up in Facebook ads separately, since that one has its own causes.

Professional Store Appearance

A cluttered product gallery with dozens of variant images looks unprofessional. Showing only relevant images creates the polished, high-end shopping experience that builds trust and brand value.

“This app makes it super easy to manage images for products that have multiple variations (size and flavor in my case). The support is great as well!”

Real-World Example

Consider a jewelry store selling rings with two customizable stones. With 4 colors for Stone 1 and 4 colors for Stone 2, you have 16 possible combinations. Without Rubik, customers would see all 16+ product images regardless of their selection.

With Rubik, when a customer selects “Blue + Red,” they see only:

  • The product image shows the Blue-Red combination
  • Your lifestyle photos that apply to all variants

Clean, clear, and precisely what they need to make a confident purchase decision.

FAQ

Which app should I use for products with multiple variant options?

Rubik Variant Images, built by Craftshift, is the app we make for this. It assigns images across several options at once and shows only the photos matching every selection, rather than filtering on colour alone. 5.0 stars across 420 reviews, Built for Shopify certified, free for one product and $25 a month for 100. If all you need is one image per colour on a single option, plenty of cheaper apps do that, and GLO Color Swatch has far more reviews than we do at 4.9 across 1,742.

Can Shopify show different images per variant combination without an app?

Not for combinations. Shopify lets you set one featured image per variant, and some newer themes group gallery images by a single option value. Nothing native reads two options at once and narrows the gallery to their intersection, which is exactly the gap this post is about.

How many options can I assign images to?

Every option Shopify lets you define on the product, so up to three option types. Assignments combine, so Color plus Material plus Size narrows down to the images matching all three. Values with no images assigned simply show the unassigned pool.

What happens to my lifestyle photos and size charts?

Leave them unassigned and they stay visible for every combination. That is the intended pattern: assign the shots that show a specific combination, leave everything generic alone.

Does this work with my theme?

Rubik supports 350+ themes natively, including Dawn, Horizon, Prestige, Impulse and Impact, plus seven page builders (Beae, EComposer, Foxify, GemPages, Instant, PageFly, Replo). If your theme is heavily customised, install on the free plan, configure one product and look at it on the storefront before paying anything.

Will it slow the product page down?

The configuration is stored in Shopify metafields, so the storefront reads data that arrives with the page rather than calling an external server on every view. That is the question to ask any app in this category before installing it, ours included.

Get Started

If your product images depend on two or three choices at once, the manual workaround is to photograph every combination and hope shoppers scroll patiently. They don’t. Install on the free plan, configure one product, and look at the result on your own storefront before you pay for anything.
