Best Shopify returns and exchange apps 2026: 8 verified and ranked

Best Shopify returns and exchange apps 2026: 8 verified and ranked

Short answer: the returns app with the longest track record on Shopify is AfterShip Returns, which runs a branded portal, automated approval rules and exchange offers that convert refunds into store credit. 4.7 stars across 1,392 reviews, on the App Store since 2017, $19/month for 20 returns.

Returns software does one commercial thing. It takes an order that was heading for a refund and tries to turn it into an exchange or store credit instead. Everything else on the feature list, the labels, the portal branding, the carrier integrations, exists to make that swap feel painless enough that the customer accepts it.

Which means the buying decision is narrower than the marketing suggests. All eight apps below run a self-service portal, generate labels, automate approvals and push exchanges. Settled. What actually differs is the meter: seven of them charge per return, and the number of returns bundled into each tier varies by a factor of twenty five. A store doing 40 returns a month and a store doing 400 are shopping in completely different markets, using the same eight product pages.

Craftshift builds Shopify apps and none of them is a returns app. We work on variant images and product grouping, several steps earlier in the funnel, so nothing of ours appears in the ranking or the comparison table below. There is one honest connection between our corner and this one, and it gets its own section near the end, clearly labelled, after the eight apps that actually process returns.

In this guide

How this list is ordered

By Shopify App Store review count, highest first. Not by our judgement. We do not sell into this category and we still would not author a ranking, because review volume is a public number you can verify in ten seconds and our opinion is not. Every rating, count, launch date and price here was read off the live listing on 29 July 2026. They move. Check before you commit a card.

What a returns app actually does

It replaces the email thread. A customer opens a portal on your domain, picks the item, picks a reason, and the app decides whether the request is eligible against rules you wrote. Then it issues a label, tracks the parcel back, and settles the outcome as a refund, an exchange, or store credit. Along the way it offers the customer something more attractive than their money back, because that is where the margin is.

What it does not do is reduce the number of returns. Nothing in this category touches the reason the parcel is coming back. That is a product page problem and a sizing problem, and it is worth reading our guide to preventing returns with better product information before you optimise the workflow for handling them. Work out what a return actually costs you first, landed, with the label and the restocking labour, in the free profit margin calculator. Most merchants underestimate it badly.

The best Shopify returns apps compared

Ratings, review counts, launch dates and prices read off each App Store listing on 29 July 2026. The free column is what you get without paying, which in this category is usually a hard cap on monthly returns.

AfterShip Returns and Exchanges: the longest track record

4.7 stars across 1,392 reviews, live since February 2017, with the Built for Shopify badge. Essentials at $19/month covers 20 returns with in-app labels, a branded returns page, automatic approvals, eligibility rules, refunds and exchanges, and return analytics, then $0.50 per extra return. Premium at $119 raises that to 100 returns, adds advanced workflows, AI-assisted exchange offers, fraud prevention and a warranty portal.

Honest limitation: 20 returns in the entry tier is tight for anything selling apparel, and the jump to Premium is six times the price. The Return Care plan is free but it is shopper funded with a revenue share, which is a different commercial arrangement than it first looks. Also worth knowing: the analytics that identify which products drive returns sit on the paid tiers, and that report is arguably the most valuable thing the app produces.

Return Prime: the best entry pricing

4.8 across 719 reviews, live since October 2020. The free tier is genuinely usable: 5 return requests a month, branded portal, variant exchanges, unlimited return reasons, a multi-language customer portal, two carriers and the EU withdrawal button. Grow at $19.99 covers 60 requests with auto-approval, exchange for a different product, store credit refunds and analytics. Thrive AI at $79.99 adds fraud prevention and rule-driven return fees.

Honest limitation: no Built for Shopify badge, and the listing is English only, which matters if your storefront is not. The per-request overage is $0.49 on Grow and rises to $0.79 on Thrive AI, so a busy month on the AI plan costs more per return than the cheaper plan below it. Read that line twice before upgrading.

Redo: highest rating, and much more than returns

5.0 across 646 reviews, live since May 2020, and the only app here whose returns product is free outright. That tier includes the returns and claims portal, an AI exchange agent, variant-level return analytics and a monthly AI returns report. The paid modules are separate products bolted to the same platform: Checkout Optimizer at $10, email and SMS at $10, fulfillment at $99.

Honest limitation: no Built for Shopify badge, and the modular structure means the thing you install free is a wedge for a larger platform. That is not dishonest, it is just a different bet than buying a returns tool. The variant-level analytics deserve a mention though, because knowing that returns cluster on one colourway rather than one product is exactly the diagnosis most stores never get.

CWILL Returns and Exchanges: the most languages

4.9 across 450 reviews, live since June 2023, Built for Shopify, and the portal ships in 21 languages, which is more than anything else on this page. Free covers 6 returns a month with the branded page, labels and rules. Essential at $29 covers 50 returns with flexible refunds to store credit or gift card, restocking and return shipping fees, a customer account widget and packing slips. Professional at $99 adds exchange upsell, unlimited carriers and automation workflows.

Honest limitation: $29 for 50 returns is roughly double Return Prime’s $19.99 for 60 requests, so you are paying for the language coverage and the carrier breadth. If you sell in one market, that premium buys you nothing.

Loop Returns and Exchanges: built for volume, priced for it

4.7 across 405 reviews, live since May 2021. Essential starts at $155/month and covers unlimited destinations, automated return policies, carrier rate shopping and workflows. Advanced at $340 adds Shop Now, instant exchange, bonus credit and fraud prevention. There is a free Checkout+ tier, but it is package protection and checkout features rather than the returns platform.

Honest limitation: this is the most expensive entry point in the category by a wide margin and it has no Built for Shopify badge. At 100 returns a month, $155 is $1.55 per return before labels. At 1,000 it is 15 cents. So the app is not expensive, it is just aimed at somebody specific, and if you are reading a roundup to work out what returns software costs, that somebody is probably not you yet.

ReturnGO: exchange-first, no free tier

4.8 across 357 reviews, live since September 2020. Premium at $147/month includes 110 returns and $1.25 per extra, with variant and product exchange, Shop Now exchanges, its own label service, store credit and gift cards, auto approval and two storefront languages. Pro at $297 includes 300 returns at $0.90 each after, plus advanced automation, ERP integrations, unlimited languages and API access.

Honest limitation: no free plan and no Built for Shopify badge, and two languages on a $147 plan is stingy next to CWILL’s 21 on a $29 one. The 14-day trial is the only way to test it, which for a returns app is awkward, because two weeks may not produce enough real returns to judge anything.

Yanet Returns and Exchanges: the cheapest paid tier here

4.8 across 262 reviews, live since April 2023, Built for Shopify. Free covers 6 requests a month with a customisable portal, refund and exchange reasons, exchange to the same product or variant, refunds to discount code or store credit, multiple languages and carrier support. Professional at $9.99 covers 80 requests with only $0.20 per extra, adds exchange to a different product, packing slips, gift code refunds and conditional fees. Ultimate at $29.99 is unlimited requests.

Honest limitation: 262 reviews against AfterShip’s 1,392 is a fifth of the sample, and its API and webhook access is still listed as coming soon. If your returns need to reach a warehouse system automatically, this is not yet the app. If they need to reach a human who processes them by hand, $9.99 for 80 requests is the best value on this page and it is not close.

ReturnZap: oldest listing, smallest sample

4.9 across 102 reviews, live since May 2016, which makes it the oldest listing here, Built for Shopify. Pro starts at $39/month for 50 returns with exchange for any product at any price, store credit with bonus credit, an optional return protection add-on, green returns that skip shipping entirely, QR code returns, and EU withdrawal compliance. Advanced at $69 adds tracking-based automation, helpdesk and 3PL integrations, warehouse receiving tools and international labels.

Honest limitation: ten years on the App Store and 102 reviews is a thin sample for that age, and there is no free tier. Green returns, where a low-value item is refunded without asking for it back, is the feature most worth stealing from this listing whether or not you install it.

The returns no returns app can process

Here is the part where we talk about our own corner, flagged clearly, because we do not compete with anything above and pretending otherwise would be worthless to you.

Sort a month of return reasons in apparel and a large share of them are some version of the same sentence: it did not look like the photo. Wrong shade. Different fabric in daylight. The detail shot was of another colourway. None of those are workflow failures. By the time a returns app sees that order, the money is already spent: the pick, the pack, the outbound label, the inbound label, the inspection, the restock. An exchange recovers some of it. Nothing recovers all of it.

Why does this keep happening? Because Shopify allows exactly one featured image per variant. Pick Sage on a product with nine colourways and you get one sage photo, then a gallery of eight other colours to scroll past. The shopper builds their expectation from whatever is on screen, and a good chunk of what is on screen is a different product colour. We wrote up the mechanics of that in how wrong colour images drive returns and the broader version in reducing returns with variant images.

That is the gap our work sits in. Rubik Variant Images, built by Craftshift, filters the product gallery down to the images belonging to the variant a shopper selected, and hides the rest, using Shopify metafields rather than an external service. 5.0 stars across 410 reviews, free to install for one product, and yes, that is ours. It is not a returns app, it is not in the table above, and it does not belong there.

Rubik Variant Images showing only the gallery images for the selected colour variant

The same argument runs one page earlier, on the collection grid, where a shopper who cannot see a colour exists never clicks the product at all. There is data on the product card side in whether product card swatches increase conversions, and on catalogues split into separate colour products in collection swatches and conversion rate.

How to choose in about a minute

Three questions, in this order.

  1. How many returns a month, honestly? Under 10, Return Prime free or Yanet free will do the job for nothing. Between 10 and 80, Yanet at $9.99 or Return Prime at $19.99. Past 200 a month with a warehouse behind it, ReturnZap, ReturnGO or Loop, and the price stops looking absurd once you divide it.
  2. Does anything downstream need the data? A 3PL, WMS, ERP or helpdesk integration is the line that separates the cheap tier from the expensive one in almost every app here. If you process returns by hand, do not pay for it.
  3. How many storefront languages? CWILL ships 21, AfterShip 5, ReturnZap 4, Return Prime and Loop 1. Selling into the EU also means the withdrawal button, which Return Prime, ReturnZap and several EU-specific apps handle natively.

And one opinion, since neutrality here would be lazy. Per-return pricing is the wrong meter and the whole category uses it. Your bill rises fastest in exactly the month your product quality slipped or your sizing chart was wrong, which is the month you can least afford it. Nobody will change it, because it prints money. Just price your worst month, not your average one, before you sign.

Then go do the boring upstream work. Run your top ten returned products through the product page optimisation checklist, check your sizing coverage against the size chart app roundup, and see what a recovered order is actually worth to you over a year in the free customer lifetime value calculator.

FAQ

Which returns app should I use for a small Shopify store?

Under 10 returns a month, Return Prime’s free plan (4.8 stars, 719 reviews) gives you a branded portal, variant exchanges and the EU withdrawal button for nothing, capped at 5 requests. Yanet’s free plan (4.8 stars, 262 reviews) covers 6. Past that, Yanet Professional at $9.99 for 80 requests is the cheapest real plan in the category, and Return Prime Grow at $19.99 covers 60 with deeper automation.

Is there a free Shopify returns app?

Four of the eight here have a free tier. Redo makes its whole returns portal free and monetises other modules. Return Prime gives 5 requests a month, Yanet 6, CWILL 6. AfterShip’s free Return Care plan is shopper funded with a revenue share rather than free in the ordinary sense. Loop, ReturnGO and ReturnZap have no free plan at all.

What does a Shopify returns app cost at 100 returns a month?

Yanet Ultimate is $29.99 for unlimited requests. Return Prime Thrive AI is $79.99 for 180. AfterShip Premium is $119 for 100. ReturnGO Premium is $147 for 110. ReturnZap Pro starts at $39 for 50 and scales from there. Loop Essential is $155. Same volume, a five times spread, which is why you price the tier and not the app.

Do returns apps reduce the number of returns?

Not directly. They convert refunds into exchanges and store credit, which protects revenue, and their analytics can show you which products and variants generate the most returns. Acting on that report is what reduces returns. The app surfaces the diagnosis; the fix lives on your product page, your size chart and your photography.

Which returns app handles the EU withdrawal button?

Return Prime lists EU-compliant withdrawal on its free plan, and ReturnZap builds compliant withdrawal flows into both paid tiers. The App Store also carries several apps that do nothing except the withdrawal form, which is worth knowing if compliance is your only requirement and you do not need a returns platform at all.

Should I pay for exchange upsell features?

Only once your exchange rate is already decent. Shop Now and bonus credit features let a customer spend their return value across the whole catalogue instead of swapping like for like, and they sit on the expensive tiers: Loop Advanced at $340, AfterShip Premium at $119, ReturnGO Premium at $147. If most of your returns are size swaps, plain variant exchange on a $10 plan captures nearly the same value.

Before you install any of them

Pull last quarter’s return reasons into a spreadsheet and count them. If “damaged” or “changed mind” dominates, buy the best returns workflow you can afford and move on. If “not as pictured”, “wrong colour” or “looks different in person” is anywhere near the top, you have a photography and merchandising problem wearing a logistics costume, and the app you install next will process it beautifully every single time it happens again.
