Best Shopify apps for outdoor and camping gear stores in 2026, ordered by review count

Short answer: outdoor gear is colourways plus a spec sheet plus a sizing question, and most stores solve only one of the three. Judge.me collects field photos at 5.0 stars across 42,524 reviews. Rubik Variant Images, built by Craftshift, assigns a separate image set to every colourway so the gallery filters. Free to install, 5.0 stars across 410 reviews.
Outdoor is a strange retail category. Somebody spending 400 dollars on a three-season tent will read the packed weight, the hydrostatic head and the pole material before they look at a single photograph. Then the same person buys a jacket and cannot tell whether the Slate colourway is grey or blue, because the only shot that loads is the orange one.
Disclosure up front: we build Shopify apps. Craftshift makes Rubik Variant Images, which filters a product gallery per variant, and Rubik Combined Listings, which links separate products into one listing. Both are ranked below, at the position the App Store’s own review count puts them, flagged as ours every time, and we say plainly where a competitor is the better pick. Five apps here have a longer track record than either of ours.
The third thing that makes this category awkward is the calendar. Demand for sleeping bags is not flat, it spikes in April and again in July, and your supplier lead times do not care. Every app decision below is downstream of one of those three pressures: colour, spec, or season.

How this list is ordered
By Shopify App Store review count, highest first. Not by our judgement, because a ranking authored by a company selling into two of these categories is worth very little. Every rating, plan name and price below came off the live listing in July 2026. They move, so check before you install.
What it cannot tell you is fit. An app with 42,524 reviews and an app with 63 are not competing for the same slot in your stack, and treating review count as a quality score is how stores end up paying for six apps that overlap.
What breaks on a gear product page
Start with the colour problem, because it is the one nobody budgets for. Shopify allows exactly one featured image per variant. One. A jacket photographed in six colourways, four shots each, has 24 images and Shopify will show all 24 to somebody who has already picked Slate. The mechanics are in our complete guide to Shopify variant images, and they catch out most merchants the first time.
Then size lands on top of colour. Six colourways times seven sizes is 42 variants on one jacket, and Shopify’s own variant ceiling starts to matter around there. Our free variant limit checker will tell you how close you are, and the variant combination calculator shows what happens when you add a length option.
And the spec sheet has nowhere to go. Fill power, denier, temperature rating, packed size, EN rating: none of it fits in a product description without producing a wall of text nobody scrolls. So it ends up in an image, where it cannot be searched, filtered or read by a screen reader. Why do so many gear stores do this? Because the alternative takes an app, and the wall of text felt free.
Doing the colour side by hand is fine at ten products. At three hundred jackets in six colourways with four shots each, that is 7,200 image assignments you redo at every season change, which is why an app that attaches a whole image set to each colourway and filters the gallery on click exists at all. Free to install, 5.0 stars across 410 reviews, and yes, that one is ours.

Judge.me Product Reviews: 5.0 stars, 42,524 reviews
The largest review install base on the App Store, and outdoor is the category where reviews do the heaviest lifting of any retail vertical. Nobody trusts a manufacturer’s temperature rating. They trust the person who says they were cold at four degrees. A photo of your pack on an actual ridge, in actual weather, sells more than any studio shot you will ever commission. The forever free tier collects unlimited reviews with photos and video.
Where it stops: it is a review app and nothing more. It does not touch your gallery, your filters or your spec tabs. The Awesome plan is $15/month. The rest of the category is in our roundup of Shopify review apps.
Preorder, Back In Stock STOQ: 5.0 stars, 3,424 reviews
Seasonality is the tax on selling gear. You sell out of the popular size of the popular colourway in week three, restock in eight weeks, and every visitor in between is pure waste. STOQ puts a notify-me form on sold-out variants and a preorder button on unreleased ones, at variant level, so Medium Slate can take a waitlist while everything else keeps a normal add-to-cart. That waitlist is the highest-intent email list you will ever own.
Where it stops: the free plan covers 10 preorders and 30 emails a month, which will not survive a single season opener. Lite is $10/month with 100 preorders, and above that the listing charges $0.25 per preorder plus $0.025 per SMS. Budget the overage rather than the headline. More options in our back in stock apps comparison.
Smart Product Filter & Search: 4.9 stars, 2,170 reviews
Gear shoppers filter by numbers, not by vibe. Pack capacity in litres. Sleeping bag comfort rating in degrees. Tent weight in grams, sleeping capacity in people. Shopify’s native filtering was not built for that kind of numeric attribute, and a filter tree that handles it turns a 600-product catalogue into three clicks. The app also does search with spell check, merchandising rules and a display-variants-as-products setting.
Where it stops: the free plan is for development and partner stores only, so there is no free path on a live shop. Basic is $14/month for up to 500 active products and $19/month for 1,000, and the listing prices Shopify Plus separately from $69/month. Plan-based pricing again, and we will keep saying it is a bad deal dressed as a tier.
Kiwi Size Chart & Recommender: 4.8 stars, 1,085 reviews
Outdoor apparel sizing is genuinely harder than fashion sizing, because a shell has to fit over a mid-layer and a boot has to fit over a thick sock. Kiwi publishes responsive size charts with automatic unit detection based on the shopper’s location, which matters when half your traffic thinks in inches and the other half in centimetres. Higher tiers add a size recommender that asks a few questions and suggests a size.
Where it stops: the free plan publishes 2 charts and carries a Kiwi watermark. Premium at $6.99/month removes it and allows 10 charts; Plus at $12.49/month adds the recommenders, and the listing notes additional charges based on order volume, so read that line before you scale. If you want a cheaper alternative with a higher rating, MP Size Chart & Size Guide sits at 5.0 stars across 817 reviews with a free tier of 3 charts and Growth at $6.95/month. Both are in our Shopify size chart apps roundup.
FOLDER Smart Product Tabs: 4.7 stars, 440 reviews
This is where the spec sheet goes. Tabs for Specifications, Materials, Care, Warranty and Shipping, with shared tabs you write once and apply across a whole collection, which is the feature that saves the time. Every three-season tent gets the same pitching instructions and the same warranty text, and typing that 60 times is not a plan.
Where it stops: 4.7 is the lowest rating on this page, and the free plan carries app branding with limited design settings. Plus is $5/month, or there is a one-time Lifetime charge of $89.95, which is unusual and worth doing the arithmetic on. Keep the markup semantic either way: a spec table in real HTML gets read by search engines and by AI answer engines, and a spec table baked into a JPEG gets read by nobody.
Rubik Variant Images (ours): 5.0 stars, 410 reviews
Ours, so read it with that in mind. One job: attach as many photographs as you want to each variant, then filter the gallery so picking Slate shows the Slate shots and hides the orange ones. It turns the picker into colour or image swatches, and since May 2026 those swatches can appear on product cards in collection and search results too. The part that matters most for gear is multi-option support: colour drives the photography, size does not, so images attach to the colour axis and get shared across every size rather than duplicated 42 times.

“Amazing experience. I downloaded the app and was immediately greeted by Farid with a link to a how-to video, and to let me know if I ran into any problems. Set up was super-easy. The only issue was that I couldn’t get the right image to display on category pages. Farid showed me how to fix it and it’s all working exactly as advertised. I had tried a dozen image variants apps before this and had just about given up hope of finding one that worked. This is the only one that has worked for our store. Five stars.”
Soffe Wholesale, US, 2025-03-20, Rubik Variant Images reviews on the Shopify App Store
Where it is the wrong pick, plainly: 410 reviews against Judge.me’s 42,524 means we lose on track record and you should weigh that. It only covers one product’s own variants, so if Slate and Orange are two separate products in your catalogue this cannot join them and you want the next entry. It also does nothing for specs, sizing or filtering. Free plan covers one product, Starter is $25/month for 100. There is a live demo store and getting started docs. High colour counts specifically are covered in this roundup for stores with many colour variants.
Rubik Combined Listings (ours): 5.0 stars, 63 reviews
Also ours, and the smallest listing on this page. Sixty-three reviews. Plenty of gear catalogues are built the other way round, with each colourway as its own product because that is how the distributor feed arrives, which is fine for search and awful for a collection page showing the same jacket six times in a row. This links those separate products into one listing with swatches and puts swatches under the product cards so a shopper can switch colourway without leaving the grid.
“I use Rubik Combined Listings Along with Rubik Swatch. I went through, no exaggerating, 50 apps before I found what I needed. Theses guys are the real deal, and they will jump on chat and fix your problems ASAP. Definately reccomend.”
Parks Nerd, US, 2026-03-18, Rubik Combined Listings reviews on the Shopify App Store
Where it is the wrong pick: 63 reviews against 42,524 is not a close contest, and if you need per-variant gallery filtering inside a single product this is the wrong Rubik app. Free plan covers 5 groups, Starter is $10/month for 100. Whether colourways should be variants or separate products is a real decision with real SEO consequences, argued in our separate products vs variants decision guide and in this walkthrough of collection page swatches for apparel. There is a demo store and setup docs too.
How to choose, in one rule
Open your best-selling jacket on a phone, in daylight, and try to buy it in a colour that is not the default. Whatever stops you is what you fix first. It is almost never the thing you assumed.
- Picking a colourway does not change the photos: Rubik Variant Images.
- The same jacket fills the grid six times: Rubik Combined Listings.
- Half your sizes are gone until August: STOQ, waitlist on every sold-out variant.
- Nobody can find a 60 litre pack under 1.5kg: Smart Product Filter, from $14/month.
- Returns are all “too small over a fleece”: Kiwi or MP, size charts before recommenders.
- Your spec sheet is a JPEG: FOLDER, and do it this week.
- Nobody believes the temperature rating: Judge.me, free tier, today.
One opinion we will defend: gear stores over-invest in filtering and under-invest in imagery. A filter helps somebody who already knows what they want. A colourway that renders correctly helps everybody else, which is most of your traffic. Fix the pictures first, then build the filter tree. Score the page with our free product page grader before you add anything, and read the hidden cost of free Shopify apps if “it has a free plan” is doing heavy lifting in your reasoning.
Frequently asked questions
Which app should I use to show different photos for each gear colourway?
Rubik Variant Images, which assigns a separate image set to every variant and filters the product gallery the moment a shopper picks a colour. It sits at 5.0 stars across 410 reviews, is free to install for one product, and runs natively on 350+ themes. If each colourway is a separate product rather than a variant, use Rubik Combined Listings instead, at 5.0 stars across 63 reviews.
How do I handle colour and size as two options without duplicating images?
Attach images to the option that carries the visual difference, which is colour, and share them across every size rather than uploading a set per combination. Six colours by seven sizes is 42 variants but only six image sets. That is the difference between a fast product page and a slow one.
What is the best way to display technical specs on a gear product page?
Real HTML tables inside tabs, not an image of a table. FOLDER Smart Product Tabs does this at 4.7 stars across 440 reviews, free with app branding or $5/month without, and its shared tabs let you write the warranty text once for a whole collection. Text in a JPEG cannot be indexed, filtered or read aloud.
How should an outdoor store handle seasonal stock gaps?
Capture the intent instead of losing it. A variant-level notify-me form turns a sold-out size into an email address, and a preorder button turns a spring delivery into revenue in January. STOQ does both at 5.0 stars across 3,424 reviews, with a free tier of 10 preorders and 30 emails a month.
How many apps does an outdoor gear store actually need?
Four, at most. Reviews, size charts, something that fixes colourway imagery, and one of either filtering or restock alerts depending on whether your bottleneck is discovery or supply. Stores running eight apps do not convert better than stores running four; they just load slower.
